RM £8 Customs Charge on £10 order

So custardy, you assumed P+P was charged? And further assumed that said P+P was £75? Wouldn't be very MSE to pay £75 postage on an item worth £100 would it? I stated £100 for a reason - that reason being that's what I paid (P+P was the same price as your "advice").0

Charged or not is irrelevant
it was paid at point of despatch. Cry all day long on semantics.
No doubt you got your mother(cutting those apron strings soon?) to scan the customs declaration and postage label for you.....0 -

Thanks Wealdroam. Don't have much information at hand as it had to be delivered to the UK and we're abroad. From the limited information I have, the full charge of £35.65 is being made by HMRC, but once I have a copy of the payment request I'll have more details. At present, all I know is that £35.65 was payable in order to get the package released.0

My understanding is that RM's £8 fee is one of the cheaper ones.
I could well believe the likes of FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc would charge £15 or more.
So your £35.65 could easily be £20 vat plus £15.65 handling.0 -
You could have done your own import clearance - it certainly slows-up delivery but you don't pay a penny more than any duty required and never face a clearance fee again.
Full details are on enough threads here already.0 -
That's fine.

Possibly, but the invoice (it was through Amazon) does state Goods £100, P+P Free. Total charge £100. Even so, I'll have a look once the paperwork arrives and update then.0 -
Details established. VAT charged £27.65. Handling fee £8. Total charge £35.65. So an overcharge of £7.65 on the VAT which comes out as calculated on a net cost of £138.25. Simply couldn't be bothered to argue this one, as a) would cost me as much in postage and phone calls anyway and b) The supplier in Japan have credited me the full amount as a goodwill gesture.0

Anyway, good to hear that you have had a good outcome... thanks for the feedback.0
