  • The OP stated in a 2013 thread that she realised that CB ends when the "child" ceases education.
  • In order for you to get some urgent financial help, do you have anything that you could sell? You may not get anything like what you paid for the items, but this a "needs must" situation, and would give you more cash.

    Good luck.

There must be proof of the phone call because that's when I claimed for working tax and child tax credit, so they were told of the date my sons education finished but I had no idea that both these credits would stop, if I'd known that I would have tried to find extra work somewhere! I had been spoken to a number of years ago with reference to benefit fraud, I didn't understand then what I had done wrong. Obviously I can see the problem now but it's not something I've done on purpose because ive got quite a large bill to pay that I can't afford to repay! Who would do that on purpose.

CB is different to the benefits I was claiming so that's has nothing to do with this!

I don't have anything to sell.

Also in the job I'm doing I've now lost a client for a few weeks as she is in hospital. So I'm losing an hour per night I've worked!

If I understand it you told them when you claimed in 2013 that your son's education would finish Sept 2014.

But did you call them in Sept 2014 when he finished?

Someone else will probably know, but I don't think tax credits accept advance notice of changes.

No I didn't call to say he finished education. CB stopped without me telling them and as I continued to get both working and child tax I thought they were until he reached 18 and could claim Jobseeker's Allowance. Had no idea that working tax was working 30+ hours because when I applied I was on between 16-18 hours.

Given that you have had past difficulties with incorrectly claiming benefits, did you not think it a good idea to check you were still entitled? Ignorance is no defence to your overpayment.

When I applied to child tax and Woking tax crediting 2013 they asked about his course, certificates, length etc. I gave them the date it finished, which was September 2014. I didn't think to ring again in September 2014 that his course had finished. I did the same with CB and they stopped their payment in September without me contacting them so I continued to receive wtc/ctc.

Didn't think about whether you were entitled or not.
Didn't think to ring them to advise of a change in circumstances.
Didn't think to look for more work.

Common theme - is it clear what you need to do now?

that is precisely why you have found yourself in the situation you are in!
you obviously were well read on entitlement , in order that you made a claim.
along with this entitlenment comes the responsibility to inform them of changes in circumstance.

i presume you would have called quickly enough if they had stopped earlier than you thought they should?
so why just accept the fact that they kept paying you once your son left education?
