Acer Aspire 7520 please help?

Hi, my acer has stopped working, when i power it on the fan works for a couple of seconds and thats it, nothing

The power button is flashing green and i can hear a slight noise, like something is trying to work, if you know what i mean, and the noise is coming from the right hand side just above where the numbers are on the keyboard, if that makes sense?

The fan is clean and free from dust,

Please help, thank you

  • This is normally due to a power issue. Does it boot without the battery?

It could be a faulty power lead, do you have a spare you could try?

unplug charger, remove battery, and hold down power button for 1 minute. Then, plug in charger (not battery at this stage) and see if it will boot then...

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Could be the charger, know anyone with a voltmeter who can test the voltage from the plug ?

Next it could be the socket, you can get those on ebay for your model for about £5, IIRC your Acer isn't one of those with a board soldered socket as it's a much easier job to do. If that doesn't work then it's a motherboard fault.

Hi, thank you, i dont know anyone with a voltmeter sorry

The charger is quite new, only a few months old and i recently replaced the socket about 5 months ago, it was working perfect, no problems

I was watching a youtube video when it happened, it froze, my mouse froze, i had to press the power key to shut it down, went to turn in on, it wouldn't

    That's when this problem started

    Thank you

If a new power adaptor (or borrowed one) does not work then this could be bad news and it's down to lead free solder. When they banned lead from solder the replacement wasn't as elastic and suffered from brittle cracks which are made worse by heating and cooling cycles. Eventually these solder joints fail under the chips causing a motherboard fault. HP AMD based units seem more prone to this and there was a big problem with Nvidia having to do a product recall (and a class action suit) a few years ago due to the balling joints of their GPUs.

how long did you hold the power button for, flashing power button normally means in standby

You can also try turning it on with just the battery. That model appears particularly problematic. People using ovens and hairdryers. BIOS recovery is but one possibility amongst many.

As nifty pointed out above there are home methods you can try to do the solder reflow yourself (google motherboard reballing and reflow) but you do run the risk of unintenionally cooking other components beyond repair or fail to reach the correct solder melting point. Alternatively there are professionals who offer this service using specialist equipment but you have to ask yourself if it is economically worthwhile the repair spend on an old laptop.

You could try warming the laptop on a (not too hot) radiator and seeing if this flexes the joint enough to get it to boot.

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.
