new vacuum broke

Options
My son and partner purchased a new vacuum in the sales at Curry PC World in the new year sales. Four weeks later it stopped working. My son checked it and found the belt inside has broken. A part it goes around had been rusty and having a sharp edge it cut the belt.

They contacted customer services who told them because it was over three weeks old it can't be returned. An engineer will go to their home and repair it. A date was arranged and my son's partner took the time off to be home. The engineer didn't arrive. When she phoned to find out why he had got lost.

They are still without a vacuum and no sign of an engineer. What are their rights where going back to the retailer and demanding a refund?

  • Not sure about your rights, my advice is to buy a new belt.

    Save yourself much hassle.

They are a consumable, vacuums that have been stored a while often break belts - once replaced they will last ages.
  • Usual rights, the as the item is under six months old, the onus is on the supplier.

They can chose whether to Refund, Replace or Repair.

    Ah Currys, we know!

Ignore, technically a consumable, but the onus is on the supplier!

But unless they also buy a replacement for the bit that "had been rusty and having a sharp edge", the new belt will probably only last as long as the original item (4 weeks).

Was it bought instore? If so, personally I would take it into the store and they can pass it onto the engineer at their leisure.

Indeed true, OP seems troubled, for a couple of quid it is fixed, fair option, fair comment.

They clean up when run with a new belt. The issue is the belt not being turned and it 'sets' in one position over a period of time, when run they snap.

Surely a belt on a vacuum should last longer than four weeks. I've had my vacuum over two years and never had a new belt on it. Four weeks seems wrong.

And what about the part that caused the belt to break in the first place?

They are a young couple and £100 for a vacuum that can't be used is a lot of money.

Tell them to take it back to store and kick up a fuss ( is 1 of them likely to be more likely to do this )

have a look in the box, sometimes they come with a spare belt
  • Just spoken to my son. Hoover tonight told him they are sending them replacement parts.

But son checked his bank and has been charged £16 by hoover for them!

If they don't refund it there will be some corresponding between us and the CEO.
