SSE is installing these in my area for their customers.
I am with Atlantic a part of SSE which is going to be abolished soon.

If I want this meter I have to join SSE with the promise that 'Nothing will change, tariffs will be the same and my DD payments. I am in credit with both Gas and Elec, my annual contract is every March, I will get a refund on any over payments.

Is this a scheme worth changing for?

The one thing bothering me is that I will have to stay with SSE , as not all other companies will be compatible with the smart meter.

    Thoughts anyone?

Hi I have had smart meters for some years now I am with British Gas I have been looking into changing my energy supplier to save money but I have been told if i change I will not have the same functions, the smart meter will not send reading to my new supplier, and I will have to revert back to reading it every 3 mnths and them coming out to read it, also I will loose the function of my in house monitor. I have read in sunday times that by 2016 all smart meters will have to be compatiable to other energy firms but it does not help me now, so i have a 2 choices save money and loose my smart meter facilities or keep smart meter and pay more for my energy...In house monitors are good at advising you how much your using at any precise moment. hope this helps:)

I'm sure that you could get yourself another in-house monitor. We were given one by nPower a few years ago and I much prefer it to the one that came with our Smart Meter. I'm pretty sure that it hasn't made us economise on electricity useage as we are both good at switching off but the daily useage data are interesting. Our bungalow consumes 3.5 kWh per day when we are away [presumably fridges and freezer] compared with 10 kWh per day [average] when we are in residence. I find it surprising that all that cooking, dishwashing, laundry, TV and lighting etc only triples the consumption.
