broadband question

I am with virgin at the moment but need to change because of cost.
Do I need a new phone line if i swap providers.

  • In most case, the answer would be yes. If you are currently holding a telephone line with Virgin and paying them line rental, you will have to move on to another line provider. In most cases, this would be seamless. But you really need to find out which provider you are going to go along with first and it all really depends upon where you live too.

Are you provided by Virgin through their cable system, or with what they called "Virgin National" through a phone line. If the former, you will need a new phone line or to reactivate an old style phone line if it still in the house somewhere. If the latter, you are being transferred to TalkTalk automatically because Virgin has sold all its non-cable connections to them. But if you opt to go to another provider, they will use your existing phone line.

Since VM are the only national cable provider, the answer in all cases will be yes, unless the OP is on Virgin National ADSL service, which is in the process of being transferred to TalkTalk, as described above
Since the new BT-based line is entirely separate to the cable line, the process is not necessarily seamless, it can overlap or result in a gap in service, depending on when the 2 parties involved do their part of the process, and whether the number is being ported.
