    Afternoon DFW-Jedis,

Well, life goes on, as does the almost everlasting quest for solvency and sanity.

    Thanks for the starter Ziggy.

Today is my last day off which I have thus far spent by dozing on the sofa, so, no spending happening there. Just a teeny tiny list today:

    The List:

:starmod: Check online banking and reconcile monies.

    :starmod: Do i-Say surveys.

:starmod: Turn off electric alarm clock at the wall til tonight.

:starmod: Still have to take-up new work trousers on sewing machine to fit my gnome-like height.

:starmod: Watch DVDs from the cupboard.

:starmod: pbo pbSpeak to MP again about 6 weeks' randomly missing Tax Credits.

Well that's me for today. Good luck on your quests, Jedis.

    Afternoon Frugal Friends,
Useful sort of day......money saving bits of which are:
*Did last of this week's laundry overnight on cheap tariff.
*Pegged laundry out on line as it's so windy & it has completely dried! Yesterday's out-peggings got half dry & just needed finishing off on heated airer, so that's just one night only of Economy 7 tariff heated airer use for this week.
*Made dough for bread rolls. They're just proving.
*Used the rest of the rubber chicken divvied up yesterday. have prepped everything for fajhitas tonight, made a big chicken stew & tuned the rest of it into a chilli chicken pasta bake, which I've frozen for a 'free' meal another week.
*Froze 2 cartons of chicken stock made yesterday.
*Checked ebay. No more sales, but a couple more watchers.
*Phoned up & cancelled a small job I'd asked a workman to do. He was having trouble fitting us in anyway, & I think we can actually manage to do the job ourselves. Will save about £60 or so which I've provisionally ear-marked for something else.
*Made tomorrow's packed lunch & work snacks.
*Did a very few surveys as wasn't in the mood.....though I love getting the vouchers :-)
*De-cluttered today's 24 items. Only 4 more days of this challenge to go, but that's still another 106 items to de-clutter. Haven't even started on the under-bed storage box yet, though.
*Probably continue my knitting project tonight, nothing that costs any money, anyway!
Oh....& the car service yesterday.... It did need some jobs doing, but the final bill was less than the amount of money I'd squirrelled away into the Car Piggy. We needed a new air-box clip, & naturally, the clip we required is no longer available to buy individually, you have to buy a whole new air-box - £110, but the mechanic expressly told mr f NOT to spend £110 on a new box & mended it for us with one carefully positioned screw, which is removable when we need to change the filters. Another £110 would have put the bill above the amount of money I'd put aside, so I was pleased it this job could be sorted without the outlay.
Hope everyone's seen at least a little bit of this lovely sunshine today.
    Cheers,
    f x

Bobarella - Just remembered you asked yesterday what had caused the increased gas usage recently? I think it is this: Our gas combi boiler has been a bit iffy recently, in that its willingness to provide hot water has become a bit random. It's got worse this last week, bath water is not much above lukewarm, ditto bathroom sink, which takes ages to run hot. In the kitchen, we sometimes get piping hot water but it is becoming more rare & it's mostly lukewarm & sometimes it's cold. The gas jets in the boiler flare up as normal when the hot water taps are switched on, but after a while, they are dying down so that they are insufficient to heat the water. This means we are doing rather a lot of standing around running taps to try & get a bowl of hot water. As the jets are all on (just not fully), we will be using gas but having little hot water to show for it..............if that makes sense. Boiler service due end of April, but I think I will bring it forward to see if we can get this fixed. Been googling around the subject & it seems to be a common problem & can be to do with gas/water pressure. Hoping fixable without a new boiler. Anyway, whatever it is....it wants sorting!

Had a hypo whilst in town today :-| managed ok but ended up buying some food to top sugars up and taxi home as Wasnt up to the wall. Takes over a hour til I feel 'normal again' no harm done but spent money I wouldn't otherwise which is annoying!
Looking at getting back to work now, something part time. Trying to get my head around childcare arrangements to be able to do this. I'm thinking a childminder to pick up ds1 from school and nursery for ds2. It's just a case off finding a job that hours suit.
Keeping heating off in the morning if I have any appointments etc so not heating the house up for the sake off just a hour or half hour.
Picked up a new top in the sale, fought the urge to get one of the new stock items. After all, I'll only be annoyed when I see them in the sale in a few weeks. I have a clothes budget so it's accounted for.
World book day next weeks, ds1 needs a costume. Just going to use something out of fancy dress box then find a book to suit. There seams to be competition among parents at our school, spending a fortune on these sort of things but I'm not one to get dragged into that. No one can tell the difference unless you brag about it!!

Hope everyone had a lovley day

  • Well done Red-Squirrel on careful use of electricity. Will you be reducing your direct debit?

Thank you! Think I'll leave it the same unless they review and lower it themselves. I don't struggle to meet monthly bills but its a nice feeling to have a bit of a one off extra every now and then! I've just put nearly all my debt onto 0% too so it will have even more impact.

So pleased I found this forum!

Hope you don't mind me butting in, but have you asked your doc/nurse about getting some glucose tablets or gel on prescription? Then they'd be free, you could keep them in your handbag all the time and you wouldn't be tempted to eat them unless you're hypo (as can be the case with jelly babies or similar!)

Savvy Shopper! I've been Money Tipped!
Thanks Foxgloves that is interesting. Your so practical in your investigations. A lesser human would simply have called out a plumber and blown the budget.

Jo Jo -sympathy. I felt iffy this avo on the cycle home. Thankfully had an apple with me. I have suffered my whole life with sudden crashes. I am not diabetic so who knows. But I am not one who can go hours without eating or I feel funny. Glad you got home ok.

Bob - Knowledge is power, so I always investigate.

Re low blood sugar. I'm not diabetic, but I can't go for more than about 3 hrs without eating or I go wobbly too. I always have a little pot of raisins or dried apricots in my handbag, or sometimes some oatcakes or a banana. If I get to the wobbly stage & still don't eat anything, I start to feel as though I'm going to have a panic attack. It's an unpleasant feeling, but eating my emergency snack means I know that it will start to wear off. It can happen on any day when my blood sugar goes low, but is worse when hormones are also involved. So I never go anywhere without my little pot of value raisins!

I have got the glucose gel on prescription, however ds1 had pulled everything out of my bag in the morning and I hadn't seen that had gone too. Normally I double check everything as this is her little trick (one of many) at the moment, was only home for for 15 mins inbetween appointments so was a little rushed. I use to carry raise a or chewits but the little ones always ended up eating them. Luckily I don't get many hypos when out and about, it was just one of those days.
