In the process of looking for a 2013 petrol golf and the choice seems to be 85 bhp and 105bhp in a 1.2l engine. I test drove the 105bhp and loved it but it's more expensive (about £1.5k more and 20k less miles). Is it worth the extra money? What's the main difference

the 85ps turbocharged 1.2 has a lower torque range at low revs and thus lower BHP which makes it slower and only has a 5 speed box.
the 105ps turbocharged has 6 speed manual or 7 speed DSG gearbox, higher torque at low rev range over the 85ps and generally has a higher trim level than that of the base model 85ps. so you will the feel the difference in pulling power of the 105ps compared to the 85ps and they both sit in the £30.00 road tax bracket. the 105 is much more popular due its pulling power and trim variety and same tax banding.

    About 20 bhp!!

Seriously the golf is a big car for 85 bhp. VW's imho are overpriced and very much living on past reputation. I would suggest looking at a Seat Leon or Skoda Octavia.
How much are you looking to spend?
  • The same money buys the Diesel Skoda, nearly the same car underneath but 60 mpg Diesel VS 35mpg with the petrol engine.

    Thats some saving

I can get a 2013 golf 85bhp/5 speed with 33k miles for £11k or 105bhp/6 speed with £10k miles for £12.5k. Didn't want to spend more than £12k but veering towards the better car/lower mileage. Don't need diesel as don't drive many miles and most is stop start. Also think I'll get better mpg than 35 with 2013 blue motion golf. Any advice welcome

Perhaps a diesel doesn't suit the OP.

I know a lot of petrol drivers are put off by the low rev range torque of Diesels, if you learnt to drive by revving the nuts off a small engined petrol to get it to pull up that hill, having the power on tap at 2500RPM can be a bit unnerving.

in stop start traffic local driving youll never shift out of 3rd gear due to the gear ratios of a 6 speed. 5 speed would be a better trade off for local and town driving as you hit 4th more over the 6 speed being limited to 3rd in local town and city driving and rarely entering 4th gear. I would suggest testing both really well as in more than a 10 min blast up the road. I have a 6 speed only time I hit 4th is when im doing over 40MPH due to gear ratio and rev ranges. I can be doing 30- 40mph and the rev range is only about 1.8 thou revs to 2.4 thou revs in third. in 4th gear below 40 the car tend to try and run away from you making you go into third again.

It's more the DPF which can be an issue unless you drive for extended periods with a reasonable load on the engine

You had the answer in post #2 for a Golf size car 85ps may not be enough and in practical terms the 105ps may work out cheaper to run.

Just been driving a Seat Leon 1.2 110. Lovely car. Can get a brand new one from Drive the Deal for £12835.
