Is there a time limit for application for letters of administration

I know IHT is due from 6 months after date of death.
Do you get fined if you pay the IHT but don't get the application off in time?

There are potentially penalties for late payment. HMR&C website has information.
  • yes, we will have paid the IHT before the 6 month deadline but the solicitor is dragging his heels getting the application forms sorted and I think HMRC may receive them after the 6 month date by the time we have both signed. Is there a penalty for this?

AFAIK the IHT can only be paid at the same time as applying. Why don't you phone HMR&C in the morning to get a definitive answer? If the solicitor is at fault he should pay the penalty.
