Npower demanding money for old account

Just got a letter from Npower, demanding 188 pounds. They have not supplied our heating for a year and a half. We got a letter in Jan 2014 saying they had made a computer error on our final bill and were writing off 158 pounds. Heard nothing from them until today.

Can they legally ask for money a year and a bit later?

We paid by direct debit and always ended up paying more than we actually used, so shocked that they never got in contact before.

Legally, in England and Wales, they can claim money for up to 6 years. It's a bit different in Scotland.

However, there are industry rules, and they should not unexpectedly bill you more than one year later than they should have http://www.consumerfocus.org.uk/files/2010/01/Back-billing-leaflet-2012.pdf
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • they can bill you for this as this bill had been sent to you when the account was closed.

The ERA regulations are with regards to unbilled accounts.
