If a person or couple have £6k then yes, they should absolutely pay their own council tax. Why on earth would someone expect otherwise?

For consistency with other means-tested benefits...

The thinking clearly is that people with substantial fortunes should live on their saved money and use it up before receiving help from the state, but small amounts of savings should be ignored (so that claimants can still deal with everyday emergencies, and if offered a job would be able to buy suitable clothes and pay for relocation.

If you can afford to live in Brighton and still manage to have £6,000 of savings, you are not in poverty, and should not be expecting other taxpayers to pay your council tax for you.

Other means tested benefits should be brought in line with council tax, not the other way round.

£6k is quite the emergency pot and is not a small amount of savings. I'm quite sure that clothing and travel would not cost quite as much as you think. Even relocation, if absolutely necessary, can be managed on a smaller budget.

I would love to have £6k in savings, hell I would settle for £1k in savings.

To say £6k isn't substantial is farfetched, yeah it's not a life changing amount as such, but you can buy a lot with £6k if your on the bones of your ar*e.
