Is Fizzy Flavoured Water Better Than...

Diet Coke / Coke Zero / Water?

We're having a discussion at work about it. I have voted that fizzy flavoured water is better than diet coke, but not as good as plain water, but not far off.

Would like to hear some thoughts :)

Better value, better flavour, better for your health?
Without your criteria the question is impossible to answer.

I was under the impression that health - wise they were both as bad as each other because they both contain lots of sugars or sweeteners.

Diet coke, coke zero is flavoured water!

Flavoured water with fruit juices etc has almost as much sugar as full fat coke, eg this has six spoonfuls of sugar per bottle ,is acidic and has preservatives etc http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=262077225.

Low/no sugar flavoured waters are still chock full of additives and mostly very acidic so no good for teeth. http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=284475446

For comparison dietary details for coke zero. Very little difference from other "flavoured waters" as coke is , after all, a flavoured water. http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=282822492

Plain water fine, anything added to the water is just degrees of "badness"

    Yes, health - sorry :P

    However this:

Doesn't have that much added to it, surprisingly no sugars that the Volvic contains, so I would have thought it's not much worse than water. Also contains much less additives than Coke.

It has bubbles , fruit juice and citric acid , so damaging to teeth and acid erosion of teeth is a growing problem.

    Plain water is still best.
  • With fizzy drinks, its the acid in them that causes as much (if not more) damage than the sugar! So no/low sugar drinks can be worse as you may drink more of them and the acid is still there to corrode your teeth.

Here are the ingredients in CocaCola Zero

    http://www.coca-cola.co.uk/brands/coke-zero.html

    (Diet Coke is similar)

It's basically water, colouring and E-numbers, flavouring, caffeine and some other chemicals. Apparently you can even clean the loo with Coke, it's that acidic.

If you take, for example, San Pellegrino, the ingredients are much healthier (as in, more natural):

Someone with a fixation about sugar won't approve of either, probably, but if it's a choice of A or B I would go for the latter.

    They are both equally bad

    - Fizz = acid, bad for teeth
    - Flavour = sugar, bad for teeth, bad for health
    - Random preservatives = just plain bad

It's worth adding that Doctors now believe that artificial sweeteners can actually make you feel hungrier.

Could you make your own flavoured water with, say, water, fruit juice (maybe 10-20%) and agave nectar or stevia?

This is not a recipe, but I am curious if this will work, and too mean (:)) to get the sweetener just to try it.

The fruit juice is reconstituted, in other words it is pasteurised, baked to a powder, stored and the reconstituted with water. It has lost any vitamin c or any other nutritional value other than being 9 spoons of pure sugar. Coke zero similarly proudly states it uses "natural" flavourings.

San pelligrino is as acidic, possibly more than coke. Anything fizzy with citrus fruit is very very acidic.

Neither are as good for you as plain water. Flavoured water is just a marketing gimmick, it is no more or less water than coke, sprite or any other fizz and like them should be regarded as an occasional treat not a staple.
