Broadband connection speed?

Strange you are connecting at 7.5mb but only getting 1/2mb download speed. The gap shouldn't be that large.
I read somewhere that using the test socket inside the master box will bypass all your internal wiring/extensions etc and give the speed coming into your house. If it is faster then there is an indication of a problem somewhere in your internal wiring...
Obviously you have to get the modem/PC connected direct to the master socket - mine is in the loft :eek:0 -
try your speed tests after midnight, it will give a better indication of your max download speed
netgear default id/pwd = admin/password on non sky routersEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I have lost patience with these tests. You get very different results according to which site you choose. For instance, I have just now done the test on speedtest.net and got 480 kilobits per second. Then I went on thinkbroadband.com and got 3054.61 kbps downstream and 240.69 upstream. Within about one minute of each other.
I have not used the connection while conducting the tests, and these hapazard results are given every time I do tests using two or three different speedtest sites. Anyone care to enlighten me as to what these wildly different results mean?

It is obvious ...Your P.C is damaged beyond repair .Cast it aside imediately and go and buy the latest peice of hardware .This will solve all your problems .

It is more than likely all those other pesky people using the internet ..try at a less busy time .I don't know what that time is though ...Day time is buisness time ...evening is full of M.S.E and chatroom freaks ...and the early hours are full of folk downoading illegal movies ...0 -

LOL. This is happening on both my lappies - in perfect condition and one under a year old. I have tried it at breakfast time, lunch time, afternoon evening, 2am, 3am (night owl, me), and different sites give wildly different speeds, all within a few minutes of each other. Once is ok, twice maybe, but not every time. It's not so much the time of day, it's when all these sites disagree with each other so massively - there is a big difference between, say, 1040 kbps and 3240 kbps within a few minutes - then later the same differences re-occur. Different values sure, but still massive differences.
So really, I'm not too bothered about the exact kbps my pc can handle - it feels fast enough for me anyway.

i dont bother with the speed test sites too much. try and download a large file from a global company. for example try the latest drivers for your video card or a trial version of software from microsoft. you dont have to let it download fully and cancel it halfway. at least you will know what your broadband is capable of in the real world. a 7000kbps connection should get around 600Kb/sec0

Just a thought but what exactly are you using to connect to your adsl line. Are you using a router or a usb modem. Your earlier post mentions both router and modem which confused me a little.
Usb modems are known to be pretty poor with higher line speeds. If you are using one it might just be the problem.
You might like to try a router, do you have a friend who could let you borrow theirs for a hour or so to test it out. If you are using a router then you might just have to bite the bullet and try the test socket as suggested by your isp.
Good luck.

Thanks Kel, I have been using a netgear router dg834gt ( I think) but was advised to try the modem by the help team.
It doesn't seem to make any real difference and so I am back on the router.
Thanks anyway0 -
