I am trying to find out how fast my broadband connection speed is.
I've been on asdl.com (I think) but I am a real numpty and haven't got qa clue what it all means.
When my dad logs on a box appears in the bottom left hand corner of his screen telling him the speed.
Please does anyone kow how I get the same box as that?
I am on a dell with XP connection via a outer box that plugs directly into my pc.
Thanks

I'm not a techie, so if this doesn't work I have no other suggestions, but when I am connected to broadband, if I put the mouse arrow over the 2 tv's icon in the bottom right hand corner, a little temporary box comes up telling me the speed; it goes again when I move the mouse away. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I use this site .http://www.speedtest.net/
Just click on the little triangle thats is illuminated .
The other one you are on about sounds more like a small application that runs and just monitors the bandwidth.0 -

That sounded perfect - until I realised I don't have those "2 tvs" in my tray at all???!!!
GO ON - OWN UP - WHO HAS PINCHED MY TV's;)0 -

Eek , that was easy BUT it says my download is 495kb/s and upload 382 kb/s how does that equate to broadband speeds supposed to be 8 mb, please?0 -
As far as I understand it equates to you being robbed by your isp, you are paying for 8mb and receiving less than 1mb, I'm sure if I'm wrong someone else will come along to put me right.Eek , that was easy BUT it says my download is 495kb/s and upload 382 kb/s how does that equate to broadband speeds supposed to be 8 mb, please?Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0 -

That means that according to the test result your actual speed is about 7.5mbs slower. Upload speed looks normal, did you forget a naught after the 495? The tests are a bit tricky though, it depends on the time of day, i.e. in the evening it's bound to be much slower as there are much more people sharing the line with you. However, with an alleged 8mb line, it shouldn't be that slow!0 -
That's exactly how it appears to me too, ben, but like I say I am useless with technology and stand to be corrected0

The '2 Tv's' icon is your network connection, it will only show if you are using a modem, not if you are using a router so don't worry about it being pinched!!
495kb/s equates to just under half a mb so much lower than 8mb - remember, 8mb broadband is 'upto' 8mb and speed will depend on distance from exchange etc...
Run the same test a few more times and see what it says, do you have any other applications running using the net/downloading etc?0 -

Not even I could be that dumb!!! No, it just seems incredibly slow to me, I'll give tech support a call.0 -

Not true, you can have the two monitors icon when using a router if it is set to display in your Local Area Network connections properties.
Nobody actually gets 8Mb on an up to 8Mb ADSL max connection but check your speed here where you can post a link to your result. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
