The pilots are usually the first at the scene of any aircraft accident, so I can assure you we do our utmost to avoid them!

Al Mac, you sound just like me!
Strange no-one has mentioned the ONLy thing that worked for me and that was hypnotherapy.
I have had alcohol, diazepan, lorazepan, sleeping tablets, acupuncture, pressure bands, calming over the counter tabs from Boots..not at the same time i hasten to add.
I know the fear is irrational, so the only thing. Tackle the irrationality.

ONE..yes ONE session of hypnotherapy with this amazing guy and it was incredible. I would not have beleived it could have worked unless I experienced it myself.
Now I just get on , get out the magazine and there isn't the tiniest bit of panic.
All the other things do is mask what is still there bubbling away (and bubbling away for your return flight of course) hypnotherapy (or I am sure any other type of cognitive style counselling) could work wonders.
Find someone you know who has had it (say for smoking , weight loss etc) and get a recommendation of a good one.
    Good luck XX

I have recently bought Paul Mckenna's 'change your life in 7 days' plenty there to think 'yeah rrrrright!' but just like a reviewer said on amazon - forget his stageshow image, he really knows his stuff.

Hypnotherapy is just relaxation coupled with positive suggestion. Let me tell you it has worked for me just reading the book! His book on curing the fear of flying is highly rated by those who have commented on amazon and for the price of a couple of pints I would say its value for money.

I sound like a PmK PR person but when you find something actually works thats the way it goes!

Good luck & do let us/me know how it goes if you try ;)
Multi-tasking is a way of ensuring you don't enjoy any of them.

    TD,
Whilst I recognise you're trying to be helpful, very few (if any) airlines will conduct routine engineering checks before every flight - they're expensive and uneccessary. For UK airlines, certain checks by qualified engineers are mandatory every 24 hours with suplementary checks conducted by the pilots before every flight (it's their lives too!). I would agree with your relative-safety comment - how many car drivers check their tyres, bumpers, mirrors, windscreens, brakes etc before every journey?

    OOps I stand corrected,
We have engineers that get on each time we land in our home airport (ie every 2 flights not every flight) and do checks on various things especially if the captain has a particular problem. This was the same at my previous airline. Sorry i was going on my experience, i shouldnt generalise, thought it was the same for all. Obviously the pilots do a walk round before each flight aswell.

You may've noticed my use of bold above? ALL commercial aircraft require a minimum of 2 pilots - some carry 3 or 4 depending on the length of the flight. Two heads are better than one and they are constantly cross-checking eachother's actions and decisions.

Oooops Sorry I missed the S off Pilots!

I meant you could meet the PILOTS and the crew.

WiseInvestor who do you work for? Just that you sound just like my ex! :rotfl: :rotfl: I bet its you isnt it! :rotfl:

Was going to suggest to Al Mac that it was SHMBO who should have the stiff drink on the plane (and plug into headphones!) but now Jay-Jay has given me a preview of the flight we will be making in September with our one year old I think I may try them myself!

Annabeth Charlotte arrived on 7th February 2008, 2.5 weeks early :D
  • TD,

You don't mention whether you crew longhaul or shorthaul services, although I suspect the former if you see engineers on return to 'base' - the aircraft has probably been away from home for 24 hours so is probably due it's next check. Engineers will, however, always be summonsed by the Captain if he/she has concerns about the aircraft's suitability to operate the next service.

Can I recommend you ask to accompany one of the pilots on their next 'walk round' - you'll see there's a lot more to it than just stretching their legs or topping up on their tan!
