Cancel Sky early?

Options
I've tried to cancel my sky package a month early and they are insisting that you cannot cancel early under no circumstances.

Is this the usual stance Sky takes and is it the correct one?

You should be able to cancel whenever you like, but if you are within minimum term then you will be charged an ETC equivalent to the remaning value of the contract-so giving notice 30 days prior to the end of your minimum term is the way to do it without penalty.
Not sure by what you mean by 'is this correct'? What is correct is what you agreed to under the contract, so if you have another month to run, that is what they will expect you to stick to.

What I meant by 'is this correct' was Sky saying I could not cancel early and there was no option to pay an early termination fee. They stated I had to let the contract run for 12 months regardless.

    No- call back.

I think the need for thirty days notice is confusing the issue and you and the agent were at cross purposes.

Sky won't normally facilitate you cancelling a tv contract early- they re-worded their terms & conditions last year to reflect this.

Without their agreement, they will only cancel a tv contract early- at their discretion- if you break their terms & conditions; for example, fail to make payment. They would then, in any event, levy an early termination charge, per www.sky.com/earlytermination

I wouldn't recommend breaching the terms & conditions where it's avoidable.

You need to give a minimum of 31 days notice, so can do this 31 days before the minimum term expires.
  • Pen1 is correct. Sky wont cancel the TV while in contract as that would technically be them breaking the agreement. If you want it to cancel early you have to initiate the breakdown in the contract by withholding payment.

However, there is no maximum accepted notice period with cancelling Sky TV, only a minimum. So, when you call, just insist they put the cancellation notice on your account so the TV cancels the same date that the minimum term expires. You should get written confirmation of the notice being applied and you don't have to call back again.

Phone and broadband are different. They have a maximum 90 days advance notice but the phone and broadband may go off well before the 90 days, as its dependant on when an engineer is available to do the disconnection, so is a bit riskier.
