Yet with sellers fearful of defects how many go undetected, in theory refunds are monitored too but I have little, if any, faith in eBay checking these things.
I'm sure they don't monitor it. Rather they will wait for someone to hit the report buyer button, there's probably a trigger point where they will have a look. If they checked every one the fees would be astronomical.

According to the seller protection booklet they sent out in the post they have over 250 variable to check for abuse and their seller protection teams work 24/7, the reality is the buyer will get a little warning if they screw over enough sellers, then they'll get banned from the resolution centre but be free to buy and continue screwing over sellers.

You mention the extreme of checking everyone, eBay is the opposite extreme of doing very little at all.

Panic panic ...I'd better stop selling hundreds of items a month on eBay then and give up all my extra foreign holidays and trips because every single buyer is a scammer..

    Oh, hang on a minute...

And today's main apologist, step forward.

Thank you for contributing nothing, other than suggest all is rosy in the ebay garden. Why are whinging about blocking US buyers if everything is okay?

I don't disagree. My guess is that they weigh up the option of putting more resources into it and decide that it isn't worth bothering. More resources won't stop it and the odd disgruntled seller (even if there are a lot, it's still a small percentage) doesn't make much difference to their bottom line.

I want to sell a gold charm bracelet with a half sovereign, but I'm afraid the buyer is going to say:

"Oh no, when it came, the half sovereign wasn't on the bracelet".

Who's going to win that argument then? Scumbags.

That's understandable, the bit that bugs me is they keep lying about it and make claims that they look after us.

I've never understood those pamphlets they send out. The monthly seller newsletter that lasted for a few months was awful. I'm assuming they get a miniscule budget to keep buyers happy and spend it on meaningless leaflets rather than anything else.
Ebay's biggest problem has always been communication. Amazon make the right noises for seller problems, even if they can't/won't help.

Amazon have their own interests to preserve i.e their own stock and that of FBA sellers, eBay has very little interest in it's sellers and less interest than it should in it's buyers as well, OK they look after them with disputes, etc but there are many aspects of the site that damage buyers just as much as sellers.

With regards to the OP it's obviously difficult to stop those doing it now and then but you look at some buyer's feedback and wonder just how on earth they've gotten away with it, some times for years.

I thought it was a perfectly understandable point- obviously not. I am at a loss though to see how your post was in any way of any more value to the thread than mine?

The idea that ebay is full of scammers and that nothing can be done is not something I agree with. Yes I believe there are some problems, and I have problems myself- and as my US post suggests it is in my power to do something, like block the country, if it becomes a real issue.

I was alluding to the fact, that there were a number of people who crawl out of the woodwork every time, in support of ebay/Paypal, no matter what.

And just for once, they might think first before they typed 'ebay/Paypal are wonderful, they can do no wrong'.

You skipped the thinking part and went straight to 'ebay/Paypal are wonderful, they can do no wrong'.
