looking for new phone and ipad?
hello, my wife is about to change her phone, the current one, although supposedly smart, doesn't appear to have much memory making sending photo's or using social media painful.
We are also looking to replace our current tablet with an ipad.
Is it worth taking advantage of the current free gift deals with certain providers? yes she'll be paying more, but it would just be like spreading the cost of the ipad over 2 years?
Or are we being dim?

Typically, 'free gift' offers are of very poor value.
Usually you can do better by taking a phone only contract, possibly with cashback, and buying the 'gift' you want elsewhere.
Ultimately, even a sim-only contract (or PAYG) with phone bough outright can be cheaper than a contract with a phone.0 -
Understood, but not really got the spare £300 for a tablet? she could easily get everything she wants in a phone for less that £15 p/m but we'd end up buying the tablet on a credit card, not sure that's ideal either.0

If you don't have 'spare 300' saved, then is it possible that you simply can't afford a £300 tablet? Or even a £15 p.m. contract phone? I don't think that 'painful' sending of a photo can be explained by luck of memory, but it can be either cleared from rubbish or, possibly, expanded by adding/changing a SD card.
Just a thought...
Also, credit cards with 0% on purchases aren't uncommon, but this doesn't dismiss the question of affordability.0 -
It's not a 'free gift'. You are basically buying the device on very expensive extended 24m credit, so either save up or buy on an interest free or low-interest rate credit card. Work out the total cost over the minimum term. That's what matters, not the monthly sum.
With the phone sorted out as above, switch to a SIM-only contract for around a tenner and put the savings towards the iPad.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Does it need to be an iPad, out of interest?
For example if you do your weekly shop at Tesco you can 'boost' your Clubcard points into vouchers and redeem them towards the Hudl2.It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
also some Tesco outlets are giving a Hudl away free if you sign up to a Tesco mobile £15 contract. The Hudl is a great tablet for only £120 !0

Here's said offer on the Tesco Mobile website:
http://shop.tescomobile.com/pay-monthly/mobile-phones/motorola/moto+e++hudl2/tariff?deal=18532
It's a Motorola E and Hudl2.
£15 per month over 24 months; 500 minutes, 5000 texts and 500mb of data. It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
Thanks for your input. I shall pass on your thoughts.0
