Obviously it does work for some people.., it would have to. But when you think of all those people conned into buying something they don't 'have' to have for highly inflated prices (to pay commission to all the other people in the chain) and all the other people who put hour after hour in to make the model work for them, but it didn't for some reason. then it has to be questionable.

So any 'sales' job that involves selling to friends and family rather than through other contacts.., is to be avoided, and any one involved with them is to be avoided. You can guarantee you can buy a similiar thing cheaper directly.

Its like with the warranty industry.., they wouldn't be selling if they didn't make so much money in commissions and earnings from such things. If they are making these earnings, it is a large part of what you are paying out that is not doing you any good.

You don't have to get into a discussion about why (which will say to the seller.., keep talking til you find the right button to press), just say you aren't interested and then find something urgent that means you have to get off the phone.
  • Personally, I would strongly advise you not to submit to the 'talk' in the first place.

It is much less personal to be turned down before they get to present their pitch than afterwards.

You don't even need to give an especially logical reason, just say that you hope she does well but you don't want to discuss business.

She might think you are a bit close-minded on the topic but that is a small problem.

If you take the pitch and then turn it down, it becomes a personal rejection, a confrontation etc.

Yes, you can start the argument and try to highlight all the downsides of MLM schemes. But you'll probably find she wastes a bit of time and money before losing interest.
  • It seems very much like Forever Living; it seems the world and his wife are doing this. A friend sent me an, obviously cut and pasted, generic message asking me to get involved. I just said I was too busy.

My mum and several of my friends are involved with Forever Living. I actually like the products - they are very good, though hugely expensive.

I would still never become an "agent" for them though, it all smacks a bit too much of 'pyramid scheme' to me...
  • Have they told you why they want the chat? It may be that they want to test the pitch on you, as an experienced salesperson. Maybe they look up to you? You seem worried that you will end up buying the products. If that's not the case then I see no harm in it.
  • It could be Herbalife...

I was thinking this too - it seems to be the "in thing" at the moment where I live.

I think Amway was probably the first to hit the UK, but there are various different companies all operating nowadays. Do you recognise any of the ones on this list?

Only Avon! My wife orders from our local Avon lady but honestly never heard of any of the others. Perhaps it's being up North and we are behind the times!
  • I'm up North too haha! I only heard of Herbalife because my old gym instructor tried to flog it.
