Insurance - when to get?

There's been numerous threads on this board where people haven't got insurance and then everyting goes pearshaped and its obviously too late then to get insurance.

Going on a cruise in November and yesterday was discussing when to get insurance - because of our holiday plans was thinking of getting an annual policy.

So when would be the optimum time to get insurance - at the moment, if we did have to cancel we'd only lose the deposit and this is the case up to 90 days beforehand.

We're not going away beforehand if that makes any difference.

Also can anyone recommend an insurer or anything specific we should look for (we know that we have to have cruise cover)

    A few seconds after booking.
  • I'd be wanting insurance as soon as the holiday is booked.

If you are happy to self insure the deposit wait, but do the sums first as the few months loss of annual insurance premium will probably be less than the amount you would lose by self insuring.

It's possible something may happen that means you won't be able to get insurance at the 90 day mark - and if that something is something that stops you actually cancelling (maybe hospitalised?) you could be liable for the balance as well.

As soon as you've parted with money, not a moment later.

  • I've got annual travel insurance, I got two policies 1 for myself and 1 for my Mum both via money supermarket my policy covers me for cruises however my Mum's didn't so have just had to pay separately to cover our cruise. Make sure you can add cruise cover 😊 happy sailing!

If I was only travelling once a year then I'd get the insurance just before I booked, however as I travel more than once a year it makes sense to get an annual insurance. I just get a new one when just as the old one runs out so that my insurance is continuous (That way if a wonderful deal comes up I am covered!)
For some insurers cruise cover comes as standard.

  • Thanks guys - you've only confirmed my argument !!

We're going on a mini cruise at the end of March and hope to go to the Fjords next March so it may be worth waiting 3 weeks and then getting an annual policy - I've been quoted £65 for the both of us with cruise cover including cabin confinement, missed port cover etc so I personally think it would be well worth it !

Is there anything else I should be looking for?
