I think shaun was advising the use of IE10, which is quite recent, still being patched, and incidentally the only version of IE available to users of Windows 8.

You have Windows 8.0 rather than 8.1?

My Windows 8.0 machine would never attempt to upgrade itself to IE11.

Jesus. It's bad enough for security to use IE, but to advise people do deliberately use an unpatched version of IE that is vulnerable to security flaws is really poor.

What is really poor is people posting on here without actually checking their facts first.
IE10 is not unpatched nor is it any more vulnerable to security flaws than IE11.

IE10 is still updated by Microsoft and it for this reason that the update to IE11 is classed as optional by MS.
If/when IE10 no longer becomes supported then the update status will change to recommended and then critical.

    Not WRONG.
What does you having Windows 8.1 have to do with anything?
Jivesinger specifically stated that Windows 8 will only work with IE 10.

Jivesinger for one, not that has anything to do with my post which was simply correcting an incorrect comment by another poster.
I will also agree with the post from SFA.
Internet explorer 10 is still supported by Microsoft therefore there is nothing wrong with suggesting that someone can switch from 11 to 10 if they prefer the earlier version, and I'm sure that it's just an oversight on your part that you haven't apologised for referring to their advice as "really poor".

My daughter ... the 8.1 update kept failing on her laptop when I tried to install it. (Quite some time ago). I haven't tried again recently, and I very much doubt she has updated it herself.
