Asda SmartPrice Bolognese Sauce

Is this OK to eat? I noticed it has Saccharin (which is apparently cancerous) listed as an ingredient and wondered if people think it's OK?

You ask a very good question!

There are still people around today that remember cigarettes being sold as a healthy product. Yes, we can all laugh about it now but the fact is nobody knows what the long term effects are of artificial sweeteners.

My own personal view and admittedly I can afford to take this stance is to avoid anything artificial. Its also worth remembering that manufacturers use these cheap artificial products to improve their profit margins not to make a healthier or more nutritious, tasty product.

But a tin of tomatoes and start to make your own and then you will know what goes into your sauce.

If you are that concerned that is.

So nobody knows if the effects, if any, will be bad or good.
  • No, they sell it purely to keep the population down.

  • Circa 1999-2001 I worked in a food processing plant. We were making pasta sauces. I have stopped buying processes pasta sauces, after seeing what there was in it. But if you don't mind eating chemicals, go ahead.

Dont believe all you read. My Dad is 61, never smoked, ate healthily, no added preservatives or general carp, ran every day, had a 6 pack still in late 50s and has cancer. My Grandad has always had sweetners (for my 30 years I know of) which contain it, eaten badly, smoked like a chimney for 50 years and he's 90 in July.

    <snip>

    BOLOGNESE PASTA SAUCE

    Makes 4 x ~250g portions

    INGREDIENTS

    2 cloves of garlic
    2 onions
    1 tablespoon of olive oil
    500g of minced meat
    400g tin of chopped tomatoes
    142g tin of tomato puree
    2 teaspoons of oregano

    METHOD

Peel the garlic and chop it into tiny pieces. Peel the onions and chop them into tiny pieces.

Put the oil into a frying pan on a medium heat. Add the garlic and onion. Fry for 3 minutes until it is soft. Stir frequently to stop it sticking.

Add the meat. Mix thoroughly. Fry for 5 minutes until the meat has broken up and is an even colour, with no pink bits. Stir frequently to stop it sticking.

Add the tomatoes, tomato puree and oregano. Stir thoroughly.

Bring to the boil, then turn down the heat until it is just boiling. Cook for another 15 minutes, until the sauce has reduced.

    ADDITIONS & ALTERNATIVES

Use minced beef, pork or turkey. If you use pork or turkey, add a beef stock cube.

If the pack of meat is a bit less than required, add some finely chopped mushrooms or grated carrot at the same time as the meat.

Use mixed herbs instead of the oregano.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)
