Good question, it all depends on what was said in the initial phone call. If you're niave enought to believe the story they give then you wouldn't make the best witness and that why these people get away with it.
It's not dissimilar to what the travellers do, but as its companies doing it for some reason it's tolerated.0 -
No as crimes are allocated to specific units and if similar crimes have been reported then it will be given to that crime unit.
Have you never heard of crimes being allocated to other forces due to similar offences in their force area. Yes they have to liaise and inform your local force, but this does not mean it will be investigated by the local force
That's not really the way it works, but whatever I say you'll know best.0 -
ActionFraud is the police
But to the OP, were you present at the time they called your grandmother?
If not how do you know your Grandmother did not agree to these fees.
Its technically not fraud, if she agreed to them, maybe unethical way of doing business
I was not present. I have asked and asked her about the phone call and she's adamant they specifically told her that they needed her details to deposit £850 in to her account. Surely this is fraud/crime?
We're still trying to work out the best course of action, she already spoke to the bank who just advised her to contact citizens advice... meh
The bank have blocked the company so they can't take further payments but they didn't mention anything about a chargeback which I find odd because my gran told them she didn't authorise the transaction. She gave the details to bank about the nature of the call and the wording this company used so why didn't they offer to start procedings for a chargeback.
But anyway thanks for all your replies, really appreciate it0 -

Banks cant do this, all they can do is cancel any cards/direct debits etc. Blocking a company would mean blocking it from their bank system, which if its a genuine company with genuine customers they could sue the bank.watersrevenge wrote: »but they didn't mention anything about a chargeback which I find odd
it
Its not odd. The account holder has to request a chargeback, its not upto the bank to just do this, but a chargeback does not mean you will get your money back. Yes it will be refunded straight a way by your bank, but the company can challenge this and if they can prove they mentioned the charge then it will be taken back0 -

Because she gave them details about the call. It's not quite that simple, but she's made it clear to the bank she knows what the charge is related to, so why should they bother to investigate? As far as they know, she's taking action against them herself to reclaim the money.
Right or wrong, my stance with the bank if I find myself in this situation is "I have a £300 charge on my account that I don't recognise. No, I have no idea who they are but I certainly haven't authorised anybody to charge me £300, please initiate a chargeback"0 -
Agh well the bank have told her a chargeback is too expensive for them to carry out. Urgh0
