16g or storage space, surely you mean - 16GB of storage space, grow up fred, or add something useful to solve Cottage's problems.0 -
do a recuva deep scan, also run it on the other laptop
pulling the usb lead out in the middle of a write may have done the damage.
There are several nexts and warnings before it overwrites anything

OK then read this http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step and try photorec , and calm down read and then follow the instructions, don't rush
The correct size capacity of the device is not being detected. I have a 160gb/149 GiB option, no 30gb.0 -
Can you copy the output into this thread ? using the edit option in the black screen and then use paste in here0

PhotoRec is free software, and
comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
Select a media (use Arrow keys, then press Enter):
>Disk /dev/sda - 500 GB / 465 GiB (RO) - ST500LT012-1DG142
Disk /dev/sdb - 160 GB / 149 GiB (RO) - Hitachi HTS545016B9A300

There's some more gubbins at the bottom about checking HD Jumpers, Bios etc if the correct size is not displayed, but that didn't get copied across.0 -
OK the external one is /dev/sdb so use the arrows and then press enter and then when it says search press enter and lets see what comes up0

Sorry but no. Several nexts yes, but warning no.
The procedure on the video link is different to what I was guided through:
a) The warning at 1:23 did not come up, only the tree with the drive to select.
b) The next page at 1:27 was absent. There was no warning about everything being deleted.
c) The next page did not happen either. The next page I saw had the warning that is showing at 1:23 on the video, which is when I pulled the hard drive out.
There was no progress slider at any point either, yet it was all immediately deleted.
I can't explain why or how. All I know is the second I saw the phrase 'will be deleted' I pulled the plug on the whole thing but lost it all anyway.0 -
