Energy company from previous address demanding money

I have arrived home this evening to a letter from isupplyenergy saying we have an outstanding balance on our previous address of £648.56 and we are now been charged £15 for late payment.

Now here is the funny thing. We left the property they have listed on the letter five years ago and have never once had a letter from them saying that we have an outstanding.

The old property was a flat that my wife rented out from a letting company and everything was always in her maiden name.

The letter is address to my wife with her married name. But as i have stated at the time of her renting the flat she went by her maiden name.

This whole thing just doesn't add up.

Suggestions please

Thanks

Andy

  • Did you clear any balance outstanding upon leaving the previous property and did you provide a forwarding address for any closing bills?
  • As far as we are aware we cleared all out standing balances and no we didn't leave a forwarding address from what we can remember. But it is hard to remember as it was over four years ago.

The other funny thing is that there is no actual account number on the bill referring to my wife. It just says Overdue Electrical Bill. I would assume that there would be a specific account number referring to my wife.
  • Also did you send in accurate ending readings.. Thats needed to protect you from the next occupiers failing to supply truthful start reads
  • As far as my wife is concerned we did. But it is such a long time ago that we can't really remember.

I would ask for a copy of the alleged bill clearly stating the dates of usage that they are chasing payments for. Without this information you can't you whether there is any validity to their claim.

isupplyenergy - did they even exist five years ago:

    http://www.isupplyenergy.co.uk/AboutUs.aspx

    Looks like maybe they didn't.
  • We moved into our new house in april 2011. So we are coming up to nearly five years.

    We live in England.

isupplyenergy.co.uk weren't even formed until august 2012!! The plot thickens!!

This is ridiculous. I will now have to spend most of Monday on the phone clearing up this matter!!

Is anyone else concerned that this sounds like a scam?

My wife and i are tempted to go to the police??!!

    Coming up 4 years??

It obviously doesn't sound right, but it doesn't sound like a scam to me.

I would firstly contact isupplyenergy from the phone number on their website - not the one on your letter - and try and get some more information.

Is it possible that tenants after you used isupplyenergy and someone either deliberately(or by mistake) have given your details to Isupplyenergy?? The letting agent?? The £15 late payment addition indicates it is a recent bill.

A debt of that magnitude from 4 years ago would have been passed to a Debt Collection Agency.
