    Yes the friend would need their own licence for live TV like Sky (unless you already have a licence and you have the TV in a shared room). Several people have argued with me on this but I can provide the text of an email sent to me by the licensing authority. A lodger can only avoid a licence if he/she is related to you or working for you as an au pair.

    By the way you would also have to pay the full council tax (no single person discount) and the £4250 rent a room allowance doesn't allow you to offset this cost. Personally I find this unfair as a couple can let a room and get the full benefit of the rent a room allowance.

    I get the feeling the OP may never have flat shared before.

    A flatmate can find the "my flat" attitude very wearisome very quickly and it can kill friendships. A good rule is to remember it may be "your flat" but it is your flatmate's current home too .
