  • hello thank you to everyone who has replied he will be ringing them first thing but we received the letter on saturday so was trying to see if anyone had any idea why his tax allowance is so low. there is no figures for his pay just the figures of the tax allowance and no explanation for the reduction. the only thing i can find is that the code t means that the tax code will not change until it has been reviewed by the tax office so im still in the dark but hopefully we will have answers tomorrow.
  • Is anyone able to advise if, by reducing taxable income below the higher tax threshold through pension contributions by the earning spouse, we might be able to claim the benefit, despite gross income being marginally able the threshold?

    It's based on taxable income.

Slightly odd one, and probably unrelated to the marriage allowance:

My wife transfered some of her allowance to me a month or two ago. All fine, HMRC updated my tax codes and all looked good. In Feb's pay packet however, I received a tax rebate of £1300. I have no idea why i've had this rebate, or if it's even connected to the marriage allowance change, but it seems very coincidental if unrelated. Any ideas?

Not without knowing more about your pay to date, tax to date, tax code etc

I'm at work so I don't have any of that to hand immediately. However, I'm fairly sure that I was on the correct tax code, my wage hasn't changed much this year (had a 1% rise in November back dated to August), and I've already had a rebate from the 14/15 tax year so everything was as it should be as far as I was aware. That's why it's confusing.

e: found it. I was on code 240T. Taxable pay YTD £18,139.05, Tax paid YTD £3226.20. I'm now on code 1166M.

Well, the rebate's come because as well as giving you the extra £1060 marriage allowance, they appear to have changed your underlying code from 240T to the standard basic rate 1060L - giving you an additional £8,200 allowance.

But without knowing what the reasoning is it's impossible to say whether that's right or not. you should have got a coding notice (probably around this time last year) to explain why your original code was only 240T - what did that say and did you agree with it ?

Do you have (or have you had recently ?) more than one job / source of income ?
