Has anybody said yet if this can be backdated to previous years? I'm on the basic State Pension - around 5 grand a year - and have transferred my allowance to my husband, who has a State and a work pension. Would be nice if we got a wee tax rebate.... sigh

It only started last year so you cant have it backdated any further than that.

So, possibly last tax year plus a month or so of this year then? Thanks!

It is possible but I don't believe you can do it online just for last year. The easiest thing would be to call. Most people have said its been easy to sort over the phone.
My DIL did it on line and it gave an option for last year and stated a cheque would be sent for last year's rebate.

My understanding was that online you could apply for last year and this year or this year but not last year alone.

Yes, I misread the relevant quote ;)

Markie11 - look at the problem from the other end. If you don't actually lose by having MAT in place for 2016/17 it isn't really an issue, is it?

Hi Polymaff - I'm not sure what you mean. They will not accept a claim for this year because she earns more than tax threshold. :-)

Ah. "not accept a claim" is not quite the same as "it's a pointless exercise applying" :)

I need to check a few things.

    Markie11,

My understanding is that you are only barred from being an MAT donor if:

1 You are, or the transfer would make you, a higher rate taxpayer, or,

2 You are claiming Married Couple's Allowance.

In this case, the donor doesn't seem to fit either of these categories, and if this is so - and I've got it right - check if you (plural) can activate MAT for both 2015/16 and 2016/17, and just not derive any benefit in 2016/17. Hence my:

"Markie11 - look at the problem from the other end. If you don't actually lose by having MAT in place for 2016/17 it isn't really an issue, is it?"

Edit: Quote from HMRC documentation: "
unless the customer is not entitled to transfer or receive the allowance because they are liable to .tax above the Basic Rate or are claiming the Married Couple’s Allowance."
  • I'm sure on one of the mse threads about this allowance a poster had successfully applied just for one year and confirmed they were asked which year(s) they were applying for as part of the online process.

I'm fairly sure the lower earner can apply for just 15-16 without involving 16-17 as well
