Vent: Screen shapes/site shapes

Why is it that hardware manufacturers seem to insist the we get ever wider monitor. laptop, and tablet screens at the same time as most sites seem to think it's a good idea to display as a thin ribbon down the middle?
What is worse is that the site designers are so incompetent that even on a tablet held vertically the STILL manage to leave blank space down the sides!
The original widescreen format was fine but stop ramming ever more panoramic shapes down out throats. I've yet to meet anyone who actually thinks these ultrawide screens are a good idea for general compute activities.

Site designers will develop their site to cater for all major device types.
As you've said in your post there are lots of different sizes of screen and it will be impossible for a website to cater for all devices that may browse it.0 -

Well done.
You've managed to contradict yourself in two consecutive sentences.
Which is it?
They cater for all device types or they force everyone to use a format designed for phones and tablets?
ETA Your second sentence is completely incorrect, anyway. One of the fundamental attributes of HTML is that it will adapt to any size and shape of screen. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
I don't understand the phone/tablet argument anyway as unlike laptops and desktops they can operate in either landscape or portrait.0

My apologies it's obviously a bit difficult for you to understand as you're getting confused between devices and browsers. I'll try and explain to clear it up for you.
There are many many different types of devices and browsers that can be used to access a website. For instance you've got about 8 different versions of iphone all of which could be on any of the many different versions of IOS. Android is even worse as that can be many different browsers on many different devices with different screen sizes.
its impossible to design a website that will look perfect on every different of these combinations. So the website designer will design the site to be perfect for the most popular version of this device.
It's the same with the web browsers like chrome, ie, Safari. It's impossible to create a perfect experience for all browsers so they again will prioritise the more popular versions.0 -

Also you quite cleverly missed off the word "major" to try and put words in my mouth that I didn't say.
I don't like people who use a straw man argument to try and create discord0 -

I'd say you are the one who's confused. All websites did and some still do, allow the content to naturally fill the available screen width.
Now they manage to set some site up so that they don't work properly with any type of screen.
And my vent was about one set of designers going for ever wider screens and another going for restricting content to ever narrower formats.0 -

You don't know what you're talking about
If that was true then the OP wouldn't have a problem, unless you are suggesting the UI designer has deliberately built a page that wouldn't fill the screen of every browser, device that accessed
Besides you are getting confused with screen size, browsers and devices. They all have a different effect on a webpage. In addition websites are not just html, you have to take account of other things e.g. JavaScript, jQuery, Java etc.0 -

Can you provide an example of what websites you are talking about? I can then tell you why it won't fill the page. Providing information over what browser you are using would also help.0 -
You don't know what you're talking about
You can believe that if you wish, but I have developed web sites so I have a pretty good idea.If that was true then the OP wouldn't have a problem, unless you are suggesting the UI designer has deliberately built a page that wouldn't fill the screen of every browser, device that accessed
Incorrect. The OP says he has a problem because manufacturers are making monitors and laptops ever wider and site designers are not taking account of that and are actually deliberately inhibiting the use of the available width.Besides you are getting confused with screen size, browsers and devices.
Again, you can say that, but it's meaningless. Probably because you are non-technical and don't understand nearly as much as you like to think you do. What I am talking about is available width in pixels. That is affected by various thing but it and pixel density are all the designer needs to considerThey all have a different effect on a webpage.
But it all comes down to available width, which is what the OP's complaint was effectively about. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

The word 'major' was neither here nor there. I assumed that everyone would be sensible enough to assume that we are talking about 'common' or 'major' types.
Seems I was a little optimistic. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0
