A cloned key will have the same key code so cannot be wiped from the system without wiping out both keys.

You wont be able to wipe the missing key from the system either. So someone will have a key than will start your car.

Indeed. Each key has its own code. Any missing keys can be removed from the car's ECU, and will no longer work.

You currently have one key in the ECU. If you get that cloned, the ECU will still only know of one key. If you lose one of those clones, you CANNOT remove it from the ECU, because you only have one key in there. Removing that would leave you without any key. Take it to the dealer, and get any missing keys removed. Get a new key cut and coded in.

Or just stop worrying, and get on with life.

Did the supplying dealer make any statement to say there was more than one key with the car? No? Did you ask? No? Then you have no comeback at all. The vehicle is fit for purpose, and no false statements were made about it.

What on earth are you on about? According to the OP the dealer clearly said the customer had to go to the manufacturer to get a new key, they didn't say anything about providing it themselves. Salespeople do lie, yes, but in this instance they've done nothing wrong.

Not just me that thought that then. Bought a car knowing it only had one key and told they needed a dealer to get a 2nd one.

    Where is the complaint?

If I go and buy a reliant robin tomorrow. Can i take it back after a few days and insist they fit a 4th wheel to teh chassis?

Very often the reason for only having 1 key is because the car has been a cat d (or worse) write off.

Or the result of a scam - owner gives one key to a mate who 'steals' the car and they split the winnings. Or perhaps the owner carelessly loses the key and someone finds it and steals the car, which may breach the insurance company's T&Cs. It's why some insurers will only pay out on a vehicle theft if the owner can present both keys. Obviously more relevant to newer vehicles, rather than old bangers where second keys are more likely to be genuinely lost.

  • Its £169.99 just for the pre coded key fob and a blade to be cut, to be purchased from kia Korea (dealers send off for them) so long as you have the fob code that's in the handbook when you order it. If don't have the fob codes thats usually on the sticker inside the user manual, its a further £239.99 ontop of the key price in labor time and coding fee's. Ive seen the price list I got shown it when getting my proceed as a deterrent not to lose my key!. I had 2 keys with my 2013 proceed.

This lost key business seems to be prevalent to the extent that I frequently see cars advertised with "two keys" being included in the description as if that's something special. Seems to me that one key is a sign of shoddy previous ownership like assorted makes of tyre around the car.

Not the dealers problem, you bought a car with only one key, it's that simple. If you wanted additional goodies with your purchase then you should h ave discussed this before buying.

They've done nothing wrong. They're not legally required to provide two keys. Anything they may offer is nothing more than a gesture of goodwill.

sorry if this bursts the bubble op but some posters have said to expect the dealer to sort it, this isn't the case so don't go in blazing
  • out of curousity, can a blank key work without a transponder? on my cat it can you just have to get in and start the car within 20 seconds of opening the door with a key otherwise the alarm will go off.

so if it is operable - just stick with the copy without transponder for backup purposes

How will you start the car with no linked transponder in the key?

How do you disable the alarm?
