Half the trick is to only buy what you intend to. Even if you see something that you fancy, or something that appears to be a good deal (and later turns out not to be) to be able to walk by is quite an achievement.

I use Tescos, and Somerfield most of the time....but occasionally when I'm in the right area I can extend that to include Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Aldi / Lidl. Usually I check out their websites first so I know what I'm going in for before I leave the house.

    I've been Money Tipped!
The £8 I would have spent in Tesco's cost me £14 in my local greengrocers; I won't be going back there in a hurry, and the quality was nowhere near as good.
    That's Numberwang!
  • I shop mainly at Waitrose...only because they accept any coupons/vouchers as long as they stock it and you dont have to purchase it. Works out cheaper than value products.

I spilt it all up too. Aldi for washing powder and some cold cuts. Tesco for basics (with a list), local market for fruit and veg - and the butcher at the market. Most within 2 mile radius so very lucky there.

In a former life i used to work for Asda, they accept coupons as long as they stock the item, you don't need to buy the item. i cut out about £2.00 a week and use them there regualry and it's saved me loads over the years.

I don't find Lidl/Aldi much cheaper myself unless there are offers on. I also shop around. Meat usually comes from farm shop, price per kilo is similar on most items, some are cheaper, I can get sirloin steaks for £2 less per kilo than Tesco value and the difference is amazing.

I shop around usually, unfortunately no good cheap shops locally so tend to shop as I am passing places aswell. I have a price book of items I buy on a regular basis (usually price per kilo/100ml as different shops = different sizes) then if passing somewhere I can check that. I recenlty got a Costco card thinking would be cheaper but many items were not. Price book I find is really helpful when an offer is on, sometimes would have just grabbed it before but many times now when I work it out, the deal isn't as good as it looks. I sometimes get wrong off DP for getting book out and moaning about the 10p per kilo more but makes a difference.

Asda our local one doesn't take coupons, same with Tesco, even though I questioned the local Waitrose with the email Penny Pincher was sent, our local Waitrose stated it is up to the manager and they won't accept them if you don't buy the item. Haven't been getting many lately anyway.

    Hi pnq,

Martin has written a number of articles on cutting back on shopping

    These in particular might help:

Interesting links PW, I wish the reductions here were as good I think the supermarkets here would rather it went in the bin than ever make it half price or less. No kidding Somerfield last week, 9.45pm (closed at 10pm) masses of stock with discounts like 20p off a £1.79 item, must loose a fortune, either that or the staff must take home what is left, so they don't want to reduce it (used to happen when I worked for another supermarket)

i think it depends very much on the quality of your local aldi/netto etc. I don't find their fruit and veg to be cheaper than my tesco and the choice is DIRE! plus there is so much stuff that I do NEED (my son has food allergies) that they just don't stock.
I do tesco and then my local food weighhouse for dry goods.
