So the take home message is that the clock started ticking when they notified me about the impending renewal, not when it happened.

No... the clock started ticking when you took out the contract over a year ago.
Your cancellation period started when you made your original purchase.
As has been pointed out more than once, this recent renewal is a continuation of that original contract.
You did have an opportunity to tell them you didn't want to renew when they sent the renewal notice, but you did not take up that offer.0 -
The company in question replied to my email.
They wouldn't refund the full amount but they were willing to refund the difference between what I was charged and what they were offering newcomers.
I am a happy bunny and this restores my faith in corporate UK. Not all companies are grey uncommunicative blocks where it is impossible to speak to a human.
It is now left in my hands to renew in 12 months and based on this level of customer support I'll very likely stay as a loyal subscriber for years to come.
They could've played the 'it's in the terms' game but chose not to. :T0
