Why do some new cars have steel wheels ?

I must admit I didn't really see the need or the point until I drove a car with them fitted.0

That's fine Djene - I respect what you are saying when stated like that - without any name-calling or references to blind parakeets, that some folks seem to have to resort to.
Some of these 'key-board warriors' have not a clue and seem to believe that everything they do (or don't do) is a must and one is foolish if one does anything differently.
The reference to 'having a driving ability resembling that of a blind parakeet' really made me smile - I happen to know for a fact that one of the 'blind parakeets' who posted in favour of winter tyres is a former Rally Championship winner.
Oh for gods sake man, shut up. If a reference to a blind parakeet and a refusal to swallow your winter tyre obsession elicits a reaction as simpering and hand wringing as that, i dread to think what youd be like if someone was ever actually rude to you!
Glad to see you got home from work ok though - i heard it was as cold as 3 degrees centigrade in some parts of the uk this evening, lucky you had those winter tyres on or you'd be upside down in a ditch by now!0 -

Toys are expensive ! Your parents paid a lot of money for them !
You really need to stop throwing them out of your pram !0 -
I can categorically confirm that winter tyres work. By fitting a full set this year on to one of the aforesaid demonic, rwd, thinly-rubbered, autos; we have been rewarded by the great tyre gods by one of the mildest, virtually snow and ice free winters in the west of Scotland.0

You're being sarcastic, but also demonstrating your lack of knowledge of winter tyres, which you seem to hate so much for no good reason. Iceweasel's winter tyres will be performing better than your summer tyres, even at 3degC, because the compound will work better at that temperature. Summer tyres are usually 5degC ish upwards.
I do understand the Daily Mail type hype 'SNOWBOMB' etc is over the top sometimes, but that doesn't make winter tyres useless.0 -

I used to find that chucking a set of snow chains in the boot had a similar effect.0 -
For me it was always a shovel and half a bag of grit, never snows when I have these on board :jGloomendoom wrote: »I used to find that chucking a set of snow chains in the boot had a similar effect.0 -
Why do there have to be such hateful exchanges about winter tyres, mjonesyjones, along with childish references to blind parakeets and the like? No-one requires you to buy winter tyres for your car, so get over it that other people have different opinions and do use winter tyres, they are not spending your money!
I have been a satisfied user of winter tyres for the past decade now, and have been extremely pleased with the improved performance they have offered in temperatures under 7 deg C, compared to the summer equivalents, in icy /cold/ snow conditions, as have many of the members of the car forums of which I am a member. And I have nothing at all to do with tyre retailers or the motor business, I just like to make my OWN decisions, based on my OWN preferences, about vehicle ownership.
Why do you have the need to insult, attack and generally behave like a hormonal adolescent about other peoples' decisions to buy and use winter tyres?0 -

No-one is "defending" buying winter tyres, by the way - last I heard, we all have the right to buy them if we wish, we don't need your permission, mjonesyjones! And many of those who do buy them, are not "average British motorists", they happen to live or drive in winter conditions which make winter tyres a safe and sensible option.0 -
I have had cars with steel wheels and cars with alloy wheels. They all appear round and seem to hold a tyre well. When I am driving I can't notice the difference nor can I see them. Alloy wheels seem more expensive to buy, steel ones you have to keep buying new trims. Steel ones look best because the alloys corrode and then they look horrible.0
