Why do some new cars have steel wheels ?

I would suggest most people don't change anything on their car over the winter period, apart from occasionally covering the windscreen in a blanket overnight.
I would suggest that when reading and responding to posts that it helps to take into account the context in which they are written. Often, as in my case, a quote is included to make the context clear... to most people.0 -

Lads if you've forked out on winter tyres to get you through the temperate British winter, then fair play. You must need all the help you can get if you can't manage our roads on regular rubber.
It seems the proof is in the pudding that i and the vast majority of British motorists manage to get by just fine without though, so maybe brush up on your driving or just admit you got suckered into a pointless purchase.0 -

Really. Strange how yet again the country always comes to a standstill whenever we get the slightest bit of adverse weather during our "temperate British winter".0 -
I think it's safe to say that Jonesy does know that facts and reality aren't on his side, hence the descent into personal abuse.Really. Strange how yet again the country always comes to a standstill whenever we get the slightest bit of adverse weather during our "temperate British winter".
Oh, well. Another one of his identities meets the bozobin.0 -

Does it? Does the country really come to a standstill when we have adverse weather or is that more daily mail esque hyperbole to prove a point? A quick Google suggests there were aporox 3 or 4 incidents of major roads being brought to a standstill over the past 5 years by the weather. Hardly endemic, and reading the reports hardly the kind of weather that could have been overcome by simply having winter tyres.
i see in absence of any sensible retort adrianc has lazily resorted to accusing me of being someone else and levelled accusations of me abusing someone - Real high calibre stuff from the winter tyre blind advocates i must say!0 -

I don't think that's true for everyone - I have a neighbour who runs his own business and being stuck at home when it snows costs him a lot of money. He has a set of winter tyres for his car as our road rarely gets gritted and being on a hill, is a disaster for his car on normal tyres - no amount of great driving will help. The last two years he's been able to get out and get to work. For him, they are a good investment.
As for the majority of British motorists managing, last year I spent an evening towing and ferrying people up the hill who were stranded at the bottom. The only people going up the road were my neighbour, and me in my 4x4. All the hillls around here, even the moderate ones, had a large car park at the bottom for a couple of days until the gritters got round.0 -
If you cant easily manage winter driving in this country without swapping your tyres over then your driving ability must resemble that of a blind parakeet.

You've never driven a RWD car in the snow have you?If you cant easily manage winter driving in this country without swapping your tyres over then your driving ability must resemble that of a blind parakeet.
You do know we're talking about winter tyres here, not studded snow tyres?
I was driving down a hill in an RX8 in the snow, holding a steady speed, in gear, no sudden movements, just trying to keep the back end following the front.
I got overtaken by a Ford Focus like I was just parked.
Different vehicles have different abilities (notice how OP mentioned BMWs and Mercs - generally cars with front engines and rear driven wheels) so I bet it's cheapo smaller wheels with winter tyres on.
You're risking sliding about into kerbs so why risk nice alloys?0
