Drippy Toilet...

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help, I am by no means technically minded but will try and explain.

Over the course of the last couple of weeks I have noticed wetness around the toilet and a continuous dripping onto the floor.

I have located the fault. Basically at the bottom of the cistern there are two things that I would say look like spouts coming off of it.

One on the right and one on the left. Both of these spouts are what are dripping. I have put bowls underneath to collect the water.

Is there anything I can do to rectify this? Could anybody suggest what the fault might be.

Many thanks in advance.

Spouts?? you mean entry points for water or waste.
Unlikely they both would start leaking at the same time.
Condensation collecting at the lowest points before dripping.
Is the cistern wet above the spouts?
  • They are both definitely dripping.

    The toilet also has condensation.

They look like miniature tap nozzles. I know I am making myself sound like an idiot now, as I don't know what their technical name is.

They came out of the toilet cistern pointing downwards. If you hold your finger on the spout it stops dripping.

Who ever does. Thats why I like the screwfix catalogue, pictures are wonderful .

Why should they both leak at the same time? Have you disturbed the cistern recently? If you look in the cistern what function do the spouts do?

How are they sealed i.e do they have large rubber washes to seat themselves on ?

To be honest I am floundering.
  • I must thank you for persevering with me.

Upon closer inspection and it is difficult to see behind the toilet.

The spouts I was referring too are indeed screws.

The water is definitely dripping around both of the screws that goes into the base of the cistern.

Feel embarrassed now. Spouts from the bottom of a cistern. What was I thinking

I think its time to call on a trusty plumber to have a look at the cistern. Do you rent or own your home?

  • I rent privately.

I reported the issue in January to the Landlady, she deemed it non urgent and said she would be round with said plumber when she could.

To be honest tempted to just get it sorted myself for speed.

Female answer here ;) Empty cistern. Locate where screw thingie goes into cistern. Put one hand inside to hold this, one hand on outside. Tighten. Dry area. Re-fill cistern. See if leak continues.

No doubt there will be a male along with a more professional response in due course ...

eta. Probably not leaking from the actual screws, probably leaking from where the pipe comes out of the bottom of the cistern (large nut around pipe). Tighten that.

Sounds like a close coupled wc & the big rubber washer between the cistern & bowl is leaking. Plumber time.

Noooooo. Get your Landlady's approval first! She'll need to pay for the work to be done.

    Screws!

Why is there screws in the bottom of your cistern ?
Is it the screw head you see or the thread?

Have you been in the property long?
Is the cistern plastic or china

Did you actually dry off the condensation?
We still have the problem of why there is screws there!

I am by no means technically minded
Have you worked out where the water gets in to the cistern and where it 'could' overflow?
Have you looked inside of cistern ?
