Mac users: Update to Yosemite?

I was wondering how Mac users were getting on with the Yosemite upgrade. I've read that performance has been sluggish for some after upgrading which is a concern and Ive resisted so far as a result.

Debating whether to upgrade so any feedback would be appreciated.

My machine:
iMac (2010)
Mavericks 10.9.5
Intel i5
8Gb RAM

    Hi

Why not create a partion and run both. For example an external USB drive of 64 gig is more than adequate to install Yosemite.

It will be sluggish from external drive, but I am concerned by the icons that resemble toy story pictograms, so you get to actually see if you can live with look.

My iMac has Mavericks, Yosemite, Win7 and OpenSuSE, which gives flexibilty and a whole lot of updating when I switch OS.

Does OSX stop you changing icons now?

Why is that even a question? Is changing icons such an important feature for you?

I dread to think how much of your life you've wasted changing icons and themes!

Someone mentioned they didn't like the OS because of the icons, I asked if the OS stopped you changing them.
  • Don't worry it will 'just work'.

I might have known this troll would have some kind of smart comment to make.

OP, download Superduper and use it make a bootable copy of your hard drive to an external drive, and you can always go back to this if need be.

Personally I have had no issues with sluggishness running on a 2014 Macbook Air with 4GB of RAM.

It's running fine on my 2011 MacBook pro with i5 and 4gb RAM. I could do with boosting to 8Gb but that's more for my CS6 software than Yosemite.
  • Its very RAM hungry but with 8gb you should be fine.

Currently have it running on a 12gb and 16gb machine and its no issue at all (though the 16gb is a new MBP and so didnt see it pre-Yosemite). Did put it on our old 2gb MBA and it was unusablely slow and so had to do a clean install.

What is it like with a clean install?

I've had problems with Yosemite especially when it crashes when starting up the machine. I managed to fix this after a lot of messing about and now it works fine.

Also the parental controls are a complete car crash so make sure they're switched off on all accounts if you want to access the internet.
