Nissan X-Trail

Does anyone have one of these?

I am thinking of getting one and wondered if anyone had anything good or bad to report on them?

The X-Trail does everything fairly well, and isn't bad in any area. It's also reliable, well priced, well equipped and economical, and it's even pretty handy off-road.

The only thing it lacks is something to generate a bit of interest.

Theres a new X-Trail that is either out very soon (few weeks) or has come out - just looked it up and it should be available sometime in August.

I would hold off until then because the new car has ironed out some of the old car's niggles and you might prefer some of the changes that have been made, so its worth waiting to test drive one. Waiting also has another advantage: it also means that if you do go for the outgoing model you'll get a healthy discount as dealers will want to get rid of these to make room for the new one.

PS. I've found an article on the new X-Trail which might interest you. Its three pages long so you'll have to click on "Next" to read the rest of it.

    Hope all this helps!

Father in law bought one when they came out and has been really pleased with it, however he has 2 cars so only does a few miles in it. Its almost five years old and only has about 30K on it. Just out of warranty though the computer that controls the 4WD bit broke and the cost to replace was 2.5K!!! He was shocked and some complaining to Nissan resulted in a free of charge repair.

Guy I work with also had one, but had lots of small problems, and eventualy engine failiure. He got rid of it early, but I am sure there are many happy people.

We bought a brand new one last year after hearing such rave reviews about it. However, we had a problem and the engine kept "juttering" and shaking at speed. We kept taking it back to the dealers and they claimed there was nothing wrong with it. The Dealership manager even borrowed it for a week while we had his car and he still reckoned there was nothing wrong with it!

We weren't in a position to legally reject the vehicle but that was what we wanted to do. In the end, after many arguments, the dealers bought it back of us at a huge loss to us. On the day of doing the deal, they informed us that Nissan recognises there's a fault with the fuel emission but didn't know how to resolve it yet. What furthered angered me, was they were putting it back on the forecourt straight away for sale. I argued that they cannot sell a vehicle knowing there was something wrong with it - they shrugged their shoulders!

I know Nissan are supposedly great - but never again!

You're quite right, this problem is not an isolated one and has affected other owners.

All the more reason to wait for the new one to come out, in the hopes that the problem has been fixed...

The diesels strangely are the ones to avoid.

There have been a number of problems with the these engines.

Look for a 2.5 petrol Auto, it will be cheaper, more powerful and whilst it won't be as economical it will be a whole lot more fun.

Or get a Lexus RX300se instead, used from a Lexus dealer from 12k, knocks the XTrail into a cocked hat.

I had one as a rental a while back for a drive to the Isle of Wight (I'm sure a ferry got involved at some point). Quite enjoyed it aside from one incident when driving up a hill and round a bend, turned the wheel and nothing happened for a fraction of a second. Scared the hell out of me, my passenger and (by the look of her) the lady in the car coming the other way.

Comfy car, relatively nice on the motorway and on the off-road bits but carp (anag) at small country A / B roads.

  • Thanks everyone for your replies :T I forgot to add a subscription to this thread and as I hadn't received the usual email notification thought no-one had replied ! How wrong was I !

I'm still debating what to get
  • I just came across this blog post at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts regarding what they describe as a great deal on the X-Trail: NVC Blog
    - Apparently you need to call their sales team as details are not yet on the website.
  • mate had one and had nothing but problems with it, spent about 2k in a couple of month getting it sorted then had to sell it back as it was just not reliable

He got it on the advice of another friend who has has reasoably trouble free motoring other than a 4x4 fault which was all replaced under warranty
