The banks do seem, in general, to handle financial hardship cases well.

  • Hi iv heard about reclaiming bank charges,, but I am unsure if im entitled as hsbc said its an informal overdraft,, also roughly about 2 years ago,, I have had this bank account since 16 once I reached 21 I started getting bank charges each month to be told from hsbc its not an overdraft,, its a lending facility,, I asked well when was this added to my account,, basically never informed about this informal overdraft,, just after some info if I can claim anything,, as I was never aware of the informal overdraft,, until I got charges each month which I had to pay I also asked to take off or stop this informal overdraft,, got told to speak to hsbc about an arrange one for the £50 they gave me informally,, but wouldn't do it for same amount for an arranged overdraft,, so I said I need this informal overdraft thing taken off my account,, as I have never had this before and was never informed,, I got told I couldn't be stopped,, unless u go to a basic atm account,, which I refused,, eventually I went to a different branch and they removed this informal overdraft thing,, but im just after information,, of I am eligible

It is very difficult to read your post with the lack of sentences. However, if it get the what you are saying, then the answer is no. An informal overdraft is where someone is spending money they do not have and the bank is forced to decide whether to pay that transaction or not. So, they have to temporarily increase your overdraft facility to do this.

its classed differently to a formal overdraft as you havent asked the bank for the overdraft. You have just spent the money and assumed they will pay it.

If it was a guaranteed payment that took you over your limit, such as a debit card transaction, then the bank has no choice but to pay it and put in place and informal increase.

  • Thankyou for your advice. I wasnt ever informed about the informal overdraft. I had the account from the age of 16 and never had the issue of an informal overdraft then. I was never informed about this on my account. Also it wasnt through direct debits. it was through cash withdrawals I roughly new my weekly income. Didnt ever check balance so by my knowledge the money I was withdrawing was my own not the informal overdraft as hsbc called it. What age does this get added to your account as I mentioned earlier I had the account from age of 16. If it is something that changes at a specific age does the bank have to inform you?

You wouldnt be as these happen because of your spending. They dont have time to contact to you. By spending money you dont have, you are in effect asking for it.

Thats a very risk way to manage your finances and if you are close to your limits, then charges are almost inevitable.

Most banks operate a nil strict at age 16 but from 18 they wont. Internal credit scores are typically influenced by people needing a nil strict on their account.

A current account is a credit agreement. You had it from day one.
