dry foods imo are easier for big dogs and they're fine nutritionally (probably actually better than tins and mixer). Personally I wouldn't use Iams as they test on animals but I don't think the food is bad. Some people add a bit of water to the food but it's not necessary to do so and I add a small spoon of bio yogurt just to get some good bacteria in there to combat all the disgusting things my Lab eats when he's out
I use Burns but it's not the cheapest. There have been various threads that recommend all sorts of foods and if you find a brand for working dogs then it's VAT free which saves you a bit too.

My puppy is on pro plan puppy food, james wellbeloved has a good reputation,as does burns which is an organic food.
I think it is more of a case of what your dog will eat, as everyone recommended royal canin to me and my pup hates it!!
The pro plan has really suited Daisy and I will be sticking with that for a while.
Alot of people swear by oscars pet food, but never needed to try it as we seem to have found the answer.
Hope this helps!0 -
I've heard some dogs won't eat dried food as they're used to eating tinned, mince/chicken etc.
My personal opinion is that if the dog is hungry enough it will eat what is put down for it.
My dog for about the first year lived on tinned food, until I moved out of my parents and could not afford one large tin a day. I buy a large (15-18kg) bag of dried food from the pet retail places, such as pets at home. It costs about 20 per bag for the bakers/pedigree etc, but lasts aprox 4-6 weeks. (depending if I have my parents dog over to stay. (Thats based on 3 cups of dried food a day), for a dog my size I'd need to feed one large tin per day, (over £1 a tin).
The dogs health doesn't seem affected by eating dried food, although as a treat I will buy a small tin and mix it in with dried.
*Dont buy Wagg food, it's really cheap and some dogs might love it, but it's got oats in it, which my dog proceeded to spit out of her mouth for about half an hour after eating it, it was more trouble hoovering afterwards.0 -
It depends what type of dog you have. Ive got a german shepherd and swear by the Royal Canin German Shepherd variety.
Her coat is glossy and she loves it. To make it interesting I do sometimes put half a tin of tuna, or a little bit of salmon paste in it too (if shes very lucky some chicken meat!) But then she is spoilt!
Try www.zooplus.co.uk (from Quidco link) they have some good deals on big bags of dry food. You can usually find a 10% coupon code for them too if you ask google!0 -

Hi,
As I understand it, dry food is cheaper than wet food and better for the dogs teeth.
Personally I see two types of dry dog food – those full of all sorts of odd “foods” and chemicals and those with decent ingredients.
I would go with the later – which includes Burns, James Wellbeloved, Nutro and (my choice since it’s the cheapest I’ve found!) Arden Grange, even though they are more expensive.
I used to feed Pedigree, and my dog f*rted so much that HE sometimes left the room!!! Since I switched to the better foods I don’t get any of that, and I’m sure he is healthier on it. Try comparing the ingredients – Pedigree etc are “Cereals, meat and animal derivatives, vegetable protein extracts, derivatives of vegetable origin” (eh? Whats that then??), Arden Grange for example is “Chicken Meal, Whole Grain Rice, Whole Grain Maize, Chicken Fat”.
Might be worth trying?0 -
Another recommendation for Burns, seems very good and low in fat and no testing on animals unlike some other foods! Not the cheapest, but bit of a false economy giving your dogs cheap stuff anyways0

I feed Arden Grange to my pup, to begin with he had it swimming in water but he eats it as it is now and loves it.
I second gollys view on false economy, you tend to have to feed more of the cheaper stuff, so although the "premium" brands (as I call them) are more expensive, you actually use less of them.

Hmmm ... dog food not tested on animals ... think about that one for a minute.
If the product has not been tested on animals then you are testing it on your dog so you are a right sod aren't you ?0 -
raymond - yawn...no doubt you'll be feeding yours on a mega bag of Chum for a knockdown price then?!
Each to their own, but I know my choice is highly recommended, nutritionally sound and yes, it ain't tested on animals.
have a look on www.iamscruelty.com - that will tell you all you need to know.
likabu - good on you for using Arden Grange, I believe that's also very good too.0
