Suggestions please as to what we can do with ourselves in the Lake District midweek in March – 2 adults with a small budget

What I usually do when we are planning a few days away is to book the accommodation and then I use livingsocial, groupon, wowcher and other deals sites like Deal Zippy for activities and nice meals out etc all within close proximity. But this time I can’t find anything on any of these websites anywhere close to so I am a bit stuck for inspiration.

Last year we did 3 midweek breaks using a combination of deals so we explored new places and did things we would not normally consider doing, had some nice meals and afternoon teas along the way, all were resounding successes but this time I am at a loss.

We like quirky interesting places, not touristy, maybe off the beaten track, also very much into history and ruins although OH is not a keen walker. We also try not to go to places we went to when the kids were at home so we are always treading new ground
I was looking at the lakes Distillery but then I thought I don’t like whisky!
I’ve not renewed any of my membership cards yet this year – National trust, English heritage, Hi Life, Taste card.

We will be based in Patterdale so I’ve started by looking at keswick and Kendal – both seem to have Greggs and Weatherspoons which my OH likes( he is very conservative in his tastes, using deals is the only way I can get him away from these places).

    Any suggestions please?

I haven't been to the Lakes in ages, although used to visit Keswick a lot. Both Keswick & Kendal can be quite touristy and the prices reflect. Although both have lots of nice tearooms and there is the Theatre By The Lake in Keswick - not sure if it's open in March though.

also a thank you for being able to bounce ideas off The Elite this week regarding eldest child's BF birthday.

I have had a light bulb moment and I will in the future be taking far more notice of any offers or deals on things suitable for mens gifts - I've got 3 in their mid twenties as well as OH to buy for - birthdays in December, February and March plus Christmas - so for most of the winter I am racking my brains trying to come up with something for them :)

For eldest child's BF birthday I was really stuck. One of my original ideas was swiftly caped - I'd seem on Amazon local a 3 course meal deal for Jamies but when I went through the booking procedure instead of being £20 it was £40 - it was actually £20 each person  There are any number of excellent meal deals on Deal Zippy for 2 people under £20 including wine in non chain restaurants.

so I went back to looking for a cashmere scarf as he often has to visit building sites. I even had a dither about this as I really wanted something in a fancy box :D And then I had another dither about cashmere as BF has allergies to pet hair.

But on the off chance I was in the sales corner in Marks and found the most beautiful grey cable knit wool cashmere Marks Autograph scarf which fitted the criteria perfectly, originally £29. So I posted it off yesterday and hopefully it will be there this morning :j.

Yes we are going before Easter as once the season starts it gets grid locked

we have had some nice trips before when the kids were younger - Arnside YHA hostel with some nice beach walks, an overnight in Windermere YHA before we had a few days on a boat on Windermere, another time we stayed in a hostel which had a 5 course pre Christmas meal package and we went to the South lakes zoo.
But we have not done it just as a couple so this is going to be all new.

Don't think I've seen this posted yet. Again, thanks to the dark side - cheap breakfast (if you have a big appetite 10 items then go up again ) at BHS. Ideal for anyone going into town this weekend. Excludes drinks

    http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/can-eat-fry-up-breakfast-for-3-99-bhs-2157086

we used to get these a few times when we were in Chester as there is enough to split between 2 people. The coffee and tea though is horrendous.

It is very cheap, basic and nasty food though but if you are hungry its better than nothing. And much cheaper than a hotel breakfast

We had the Ikea breakfast deal once - again very cheap and very nasty

We tend to just get the Greggs breakfast deal these days - sausage or bacon bap and either coffee or an orange juice - I think you can even get porridge instead - £2.

    Morning all.
    Hope everyone is ok.

I've got an unexpected morning at home as lil stink spent most the night throwing up. I had to change his bed covers twice and my own as well as I had put him in my bed for 5 minutes whilst I cleaned his up:eek:
He looking absolutely fine this morning (typically) but I can't and won't risk sending him to school so I've had to call in sick knowing I'll prob get a bollocking for doing so. :(
On the plus side I get to wear my new maternity leggings instead of work clothes so I'm super comfy snuggled up with him in the sofa with a cuppa :)

Right, what goss have I missed??

There's also the Rheged centre at Penrith.

And Castlerigg stone circle, just outside Keswick, is lovely at dawn/dusk.

    I haven't done it so don't know if there's a catch.

According to the comments, cancelling the GS is a pain requiring registered post etc

Still struggling. I've noticed that the new levels always seem to be thrown out with little testing. Then they return after a few weeks and adjust them following complaints. There is one on dreamworld that has a glitch making it impossible.
