Looking for a colour printer

Its not just the price of the printer, you also need to look at what replacement inks cost.
I have Epson XP215 which is a great printer and i only pay £9 for 3 sets of inks and this is used daily with my business. I expect the lifespan of 3 to 4 years due to the usage it gets, but this is in its 3rd year and still working 100% without any issues0 -
Consumer grade inkjet printers are ALL terrible. You simply will not find one that works properly, not one. They do not exist, you'll have more luck hunting for the Loch Ness monster.
Purchased a Canon MG5650 from Amazon and quite happy with it, compatible cartridges reasonably cheap and work well without any problems.0 -
i suggest a simple Epson such as http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3214532.htm would do and it is cheap on inks through ebay
I bought an Epson XP 422 from Argos before Christmas, and it seems like quite a good piece of kit - though early days so far.
It prints quite quickly without going through all the ink cleaning routines which my previous Canon did (wasting loads of ink in the process:mad:), and I have even managed a couple of decent portrait shots in A4 for friends, who wanted an alternative to the "school photographer".
If they still have the XP 422 discounted then I would recommend it.0 -
600ppm is not what I'd called light use-most consumer inkjets aren't designed to last for long at that level of usage. Let alone the ink cost. At that level of usage I'd be looking at a colour laser printer. Yes, the picture and graphics quality will be worse, but that shouldn't be an issue for homework?
You'll spend far more upfront, but get it back in running costs. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I had a canon inkjet, it was a pixima ip something, had it 6 years, printed amazing quality photos out on a4 glossy paper, (photos took on a decent camera, not a camera phone) using chipped carts off ebay.
finally broke a few moths ago.
so I looked for another, found some at a price I liked, I then before buying, went to research the price of inks (only using ebay chipped carts) to see what was the cheapest chipped ink.
it turned out that a 5 tank canon mg5550(and my first wireless printer) would be the cheapest to keep inkedup, so I went and bought it from argos, its the price of the ink that matters to me. (its also a copier and scanner) and guess what produces nice a4 glossy prints on cheap glossy paper.
text is nice and clear (its also what paper you printer on and the weight of the paper)
nothing wrong with consumer grade inkjets in my view, and ink that only costs a few pounds for a 5 set of carts.0 -

Can I join in with this thread please?
I am looking to buy another printer. We, so rarely use ours,it clogs the nozzle regularly, so we can't rely on it for printing in a rush, without loads of confusing maintenance.
We, like the OP, want one that is cheap for inks. My daughter bought an Epson one and put copy ink in. It would not work anymore, she had to bin it. Do not want to go down that avenue.
Any adice would be appreciated.Keep on trucking!0 -
Since there's a chance the print heads will block (in this case due to infrequent use), I'd suggest a printer with the print heads built into the cartridges, rather than the printer itself.
I've had a few HP inkjets over the years, and have found them pretty good.0
