Switching from Sky to BT

We currently have Sky TV, Broadband and phone line.

We're looking at switching to BT for the broadband fibre and phone line. The main reason being that there are significant cost savings to be achieved compared to what Sky retentions are offering us. The broadband is often very slow especially when using more than one device. A speed test shows 14mb download and 1mb upload.

My question is, is it a good idea for us to switch to BT Infinity? Will we receive the super fast speed of up to 38mb that is quoted? We have read lots of negative reviews about the service and really can't decide whether to avoid BT or not.

14mb is a good speed and should be plenty for most users .
But speed can only be measured by ethernet cable from the master socket .
Could be your devices that are slow especially if its via WiFi .Your BT fibre speed is subject to considerations just like ADSL distance from cabinet line quality etc .However you are more likely to get near the quoted speed on Fibre .
Please note its UP TO 38 mb that is quoted .
BT Home Hub 5 is a decent router with decent WiFi .
Unless you go to Virgin Cable it all comes down the BT line anyway .

BT Fibre gives you BT Sport and BT Wifi free of charge .

Funny enough I have Sky TV and BT Infinity and phoneline.

I have Infinity 2 which is up to 76M (I get around 70) but is it unlimited.

Infinity 1 has 2 options now - one limited to 20 gig monthly limit and the other unlimited. Make sure you do the math and choose the right one as if you go over it can be very expensive.

My monthly download is 250 gig plus so unlimited is a no brainer for me.

If you want to stream TV programes etc then 20 gig will get eaten up very quickly.

We use the broadband for online gaming, on demand tv. We really notice the difference when doing either of those at the same time as using iPhone or tablet. We're hoping that fibre would solve that issue.
We're also paying extra for BT Sport at the moment, so it's good that it comes free with BT.

Our last month usage went over 80gb, so it sounds like we'd need the unlimited package.

    Go for unlimited.

BT charge £5.60 per 5 gig over the allowance

Therefore your extra cost for that month would have been £336 on top of your normal bill !!!!!

Have you had any issues with service from BT?
I've read horror stories about the switchover, as well as poor provision of service once connected. Is it possible for a seamless switch from Sky?

When I spoke to Sky, they told me to go ahead and order with BT, rather than cancel Sky first. Is that the right way to go about it?

total nightmare after moving from sky to BT, we were on fibre with sky and getting speeds of around 36mb and stable. moved to BT for infinity 2 (2 gamers and 2 streamers in the house) they said between 54- 76mb
we get anything between 0.95 and 55 nothing stable on consistent and they are not interested in sorting out WORST move we ever did

Touch wood BT have been all ok for us.
The problem is if people have a bad experience they will write/complain about it online etc . If they have a good service they dont write about it if you get what I mean.

Yeah it's beginning to look that way. I've searched for reviews but can only find the bad ones! Good to hear it's all ok for you.

I would think twice before going with BT. We placed an order for btinfinity early January and were given a switchover date for 3 weeks later. Then began the calls, telling us the date had been put back and put back and put back with no-one able to explain why. "Routing problems" is their catch all excuse. Our previous provider cut us off last week so we have been without broadband since then and we have no new date other than they will "review" at the end of this week but "sometimes it can take months"!!! We have requested a proper explanation and to talk to someone who is willing to take responsibility but have got no-where. They will phone back but it's a waste of time as they just apologise repeatedly. Seems to me BTRetail don't have effective communication with BTWholesale and no-one has a clue what's going on.
We're already looking into alternative providers so my advice is go elsewhere as all the promises about btinfinity are useless if they can't deliver.
