I hope you can get it sorted.

Did the staff member in branch get your mobile number bank account numbers? (when they suggested downloading the app).
It was over the phone I was advised to get the app. They never asked my account numbers but they sent the download link to my mobile. I had to put in my account details and such myself, and verify it all with my card reader and pin.

If it really is that easy to send £750 per day to a new payee without chip&pin/pincentry security as their video tutorials show, I'll be glad if they pay the refund from their own pockets.
I know, its crazy. I have never known anything like it..when I set up a new payee on my online banking I have to use my pinsentry thing to do it...and now this new thing means not even verifying anything, simply adding a mobile number and press send by the looks of it

Oh ok sorry I assumed it was in branch.

It sounds very strange, and I can only think someone else has done it who knows your bank/mobile details.

I used to have Pingit, but never used it so deleted.

Pingit should only be as secure as any other form of transfer, but instead of using account number and sort code you just use a telephone number linked to your account.

The risk of fraud should be about equal to other means of online/remote banking.

As an aside, had YOU rang Barclays when they advised you about the app? Or did they ring you? Because there's a risk you were sent a dodgy link and they were able to set up the PingIt with the info they got.

Whatever the story, they should be refunding the money to you.

Since they dont verify its actually you setting up the payee..it not really :S When I use any online banking (I have RBS, natwest and barclays) I am asked to use pinsentry reader to confirm its me. From the looks of this, there is NO security around setting up a new payee

I was on the phone to barclays asking them where my telephone banking code was (they claim to have sent it ages ago) and she recommended the barclays app. It was definitely genuine.

I really hope they can refund this, it might not sound a lot to some but its a hell of a lot of money for me, especially to just disappear overnight.

I can only guess that it's not that simple. E.g. HSBC/FD instead of pinsentry use security tokens that apparently aren't less secure. However, they offer a smartphone app as an alternative to the token.

There is not 'NO security' just because it is different to how you are used to setting up your payees.

  • So, as expected, no callback yesterday. Called again just now to be told that by 24 hours they meant 24 'working' hours which means they may not ring til wednesday. I asked if I could get my account unblocked to make a withdrawal as my pay went in today and was told no, as they are concerned because they dont know whats gone on with this fraudulent transfer...to which I got slightly irritated and asked why if they were concerned then why are they making me wait until next week to even speak to the correct team.

Switching banks after all of this mind. Its just ridiculous

On a seperate note I got a letter this morning confirming my registration with 'pingit'. In the reference number part that I assume is meant to make it secure...it is blank. From what I can gather from the letter, usually a code is required to activate the service, which for some reason was never asked for when whoever set up this account as me. If this reference number was required as its meant to be, none of this would have happened:mad::mad:

I know they are being cautious, but it does seem ridiculous you can't get to speak to someone in the fraud team about it straight away.

I would be  too if I couldn't access my wages, do you have access to any funds at another bank that could tide you over?

I've not experienced anything like this (thankfully), so don't know the procedures, but I remember a while back I had a call from Natwest about some security issue on my account, and they let me call them back straight away.
It turned out to be nothing.

The word 'complaint' hasn't been mentioned yet, I think - have you raised a formal complaint, and have you got a complaint ref number? You might get more sense out of the complaints department than of normal CS.
