Since the advice was first posted about 30 years ago to seriously consider using a sunblock every day, I started doing it.
I sought out the best sunblocks and applied them devotedly every single day. Sometimes more than once a day where appropriate. Almost obsessively I would say. This was going to be my magic bullet.
30 years later, I have to say, I don't think it's made that much difference.
I think it's probably prevented premature aging but has had very little impact on regular skin aging.
I'm still using it of course but it hasn't turned out to be the secret weapon I thought it would be when I was a young woman.
This is so interesting! What spf have you used over that time? Do you reckon your skin tone is better than it would otherwise have been (do you have any sun spots)? How does your skin compare to friends your age who haven't used SPF religiously?
Sorry for all the questions, it's just that I too was under the impression that SPF was meant to be the anti-premature aging holy grail.0 -
Sorry but I gotta add my tuppence worth here!
With SPF the only thing that is proven is that it helps prevent aging: the cancer thing is what scientists aren't 100% on but if used properly it can help reduce the speed of aging- the sun is known to increase the signs of aging and SPF simply creates a barrier on your skin so the suns UVA rays can't affect it to the same degree because of that shield this is all keeping in mind though that we have to accept that we all will age and there is a limit to what can be prevented as the sun alone doesn't age our skin.
The idea is to keep reapplying through the day though and few people actually do this.
UVA= for helping reduce aging
UVB = for protection from Cancer
I would say the best thing to do is just to stay out of the sun as much as possible, wear a hat and keep hydrated. Tbh skin Cancer is far more scary than aging and if you've not gotten skin Cancer so far I'd be grateful to whatever helps to keep you Cancer free!0 -
I use L'Oreal Revitalift with SPF 30 and have found that it agrees really well with my skin, probably more so than a lot of more expensive moisturisers I've tried.
It's half price at Superdrug at the moment as well (£6.48 instead of £12.99) and I like the night cream too.
I am actually using the Revitalift eye cream at the minute, I got it on offer in Boots about a month ago. I have found it to be really good so far, so will probably buy it again when it runs out. Must look at trying the moisturiser too.0 -
Thanks for all the great replies plenty to take on board and options to try. Have to say the Dr Organic Manuaka Honey Cream is proving to be good so far.
Just wondering, its not in my price range at all but has anyone actually tried the Crème de la mer?? Is it worth the price tag?0 -

Aging can be accelarated by too much sun exposure, but in large part it will be determined by your genes.
Well yes, but I'd quite like to control what I can! I can't alter my genes but I can wear an SPF every day to cut down on sun damage. No more goo hoarding!

Does the Revitalift eye cream really help plump fine lines, and moisturise the skin there? Is it supposed to work better than the Revitalift face cream for this purpose, or are they essentially the same ingredients, just marketed differently?0 -

No idea about the face cream as I haven't used it. But the Eye Cream has definitely made a difference to me. The skin around my eyes looks tighter and more refreshed. Haven't really looked at the lines to be honest but I look better, more awake. I have used other Eye creams before Clinque etc and this is definitely a hit with me and I do see a difference. It is quite a thick cream and I have already gotten over a month out of it and think I'll get another couple so not bad when bought on offer.0 -
I really enjoy any of the moisturisers from REN. I tried them in a trial pack first and combined with the cleanser they made my skin so soft. The frankincense face cream is lovely but not very mse!! I also like Liz Earle skin repair, currently using a philosophy one I got for Christmas. SPF wise I like Ultrasun SPF 50 Face. They also do a 30 version.0
