is broadband worth it

i have a bt line which is unused currently but i'm considering getting broadband which would use this line so i'd have to pay line rental plus broadband cost on top.

this also means a contract, direct debit, etc

is there an easier way, such as a payg phone with no contract, just pay when you use it?

It's worth it if you will use it. You will probably have to commit to a 12/18 month contract, so maybe not ideal if there is a possibility of you moving in the near future.

Mobile broadband can be a bit hit and miss.

Cheaper option is to try out mobile broadband using PAYG sim -1. it will quickly show you how good/fast the signal is and 2. you will soon find out how good/useful an internet service is to you.
The financial committment required for fixed line broadband is pretty heavy if you haven't used it before.

If you don't intend to use much data online such as using video streaming services, downloading large game updates, etc.. then mobile broadband is a good alternative to landline broadband. But if you intend to use anymore data than about 15GB per month then landline broadband is the best choice.

PAYG mobile broadband is very expensive. The cheapest PAYG deal which is with EE costs £15 for just 6GB data. So if you opt for mobile broadband, it makes more sense to get a 30 day contract, which costs £20 per month for 15GB on EE.

Sky is offering a years free broadband and their phone line rental is cheaper than BT. You could switch to Sky and see how much you use it.

How do you currently connect to the internet? 56k modem? Are you frustrated with download speeds, then get broadband. If you are happy with a dial-up connection (the only way to pay as you go on fixed line internet) then stick with it.
  • I used a three mobile payg sim as a backup for my broadband. I work from home in the software industry, hence I need it.

Pay £15 and get unlimited data on my phone and enough tethering if my broadband ever goes down.

Since the OP says that the phone line is not in use, I can only assume they don't have a computer connected to the internet at home at all..

OP - can you elaborate on what you currently do for internet access and what you want to get out of broadband?
