How do you buy from a dealer these days?

Hypothetically, hubby and I travel 70 miles to view a second-hand vehicle in a dealers place with the cash in our pocket. We take the cash because we don't want to have to do the journey more than once. But CAN we buy it there and then and drive it away these days? We can phone our insurance company to get instant cover BUT does the automated tax system get notified instantly about said insurance as well? Can we tax it at the same time or do we have to come home, sort all this out and when it is all set up do another 140 mile trip to collect new vehicle?

Thanks.....

  • Pay for the car, buy your insurance, buy your tax online, drive it home.

You might not be able to get tax until DVLA update ownership, but you'll be fine driving home, and for a few days after that.
  • You can do it all there and then but why carry cash and buy from so far away?

What if there's a problem with the car?

When did that rule come in?
  • When did that rule come in?

Who said it was a rule?
  • Ha! It's OK, there is no car..... yet! I did say "hypothetically".... I just didn't know whether you could do it all at the same time as it's all phone calls these days. Thanks for the reassurance
  • Bought a car last week for my son and could only tax it at the PO.

The seller said it was classed as "In Trade" or similar, so couldnt be taxed online.

So it's something you've made up then and therefore of no use to the OP.

Your advice in post 3 was incorrect, so let's not thrown stones, eh?

How is it possible for two people to have tax on the same car?

It's not possible for a buyer to tax an already-taxed car immediately.

This applies to any used car, not just those in-trade.

    See #1.

It won't be taxed on a dealers forecourt. ;)

If one didn't know better I'd say you're the new darkmatter.
