Big K Heat Logs @ Ocado

Has anyone tried these heat logs & can give a review?

They look very similar to Hotties & their Bridgebrooke younger brother, and I'm wondering if they burn in the same way...

Hotties are by far the best briquette I've used in my woodburner, but they're quite pricey & you have to buy in bulk. As a new Ocado customer, going through Quidco, I can get 15 packs of these Big K fellas for about £3.75 per pack.

Just wondering if they're worth a punt?

  • I don't know whether Bridgebrook produce for this particular brand. They do make the ones sold under the Fuel Express name that are available in Tesco however. If they are Bridgebrooke, then they'll be the same as their heatlogs - which being smaller than Hotties, are not so long lasting (this is mentioned by Bridgebrooke themselves)

If you buy in bulk you can get original Hotties for £3.95 per pack delivered in many parts of the country, and I'd imagine the extra burn time would more than make up for the 20p per pack saving. There were some people on another forum somewhere who thought you were getting more for your money with the heatlogs over the Hotties as there were more per pack. However, they are smaller as stated, and the packs are produced to an average of 8.5 - 9kg which is lighter than Hotties too.
  • do they state the kWh/kg on the packets so you could adjust this to £/kWh helping you work out the best value.

  • Thanks both.

I've recently had an insert stove fitted that has a smallish firebox, so can't fit anything too large in. The trial packs that I got from Bridgebrooke were great & I found the smaller ones suited me best.

I've got a stack of Verdo briquettes, and I'm trying to source a smaller quantity of Hotties type briquettes that I can burn in combination with them...so, don't really want to stump out for a whole pallet load.

I might give these Ocado ones a try. They look like they're made in the same way as the Bridgebrooke logs (if not by them), so hopefully they should have similar burning characteristics.
  • The problem with stating an energy content is that I've seen more than a few manufacturers (though not Bridgebrooke I'm happy to say) quoting a higher energy content than the stuff the briquettes are made from! It's fairly easy to find the energy content of oven dry wood on the net - and it doesn't matter how much you compress the material - you can't compress extra energy into it! So it's not always a sound basis for making a comparison!
  • Tesco haven't had heatlogs in stock where I am for a few weeks, and the last few packs I got had grown longer and thinner somehow - bizzare!
I've started using Hotties, but no point in ordering a pallet load when it's March at the end of the week!
