Office 2010 or Office 365?

  • Google Docs are free and cloud based. Unless you have sophisticated needs, they may well do all you need.

Otherwise, head for Open Office before paying for MS.

That's assuming the OP has actually got some macros!
Well, the people recommending LibreOffice and OpenOffice were assuming the OP doesn't, so why not have a pop at them too?

    Just get an Apple Mac...

Or buy a half-decent PC and about 10 years worth of Office 365 for less!
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

The most cost effective way if you only need word, excel and powerpoint and really want MS office would be to buy the Home/student version of 2013 which can be had for about £80. If you get a new PC later you can officially transfer the licence to another PC.

Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

If you work for a company that uses Microsoft products you might find they are signed up to the Microsoft Home Use Programme.

They will give you a code and then you can download a copy of Office 2013 for £9.95 or pay an extra fee to get a CD ROM.

See post 3. The difference is that 365 will cost you £40 per year, every year...
I can't believe the number of people who purchase this without realising it, and retailers presumably get a big commission on it from Microsoft. Last week I installed a W8 PC, for which the customer had been told by John Lewis that she must purchase 365 if she wanted Word. She already had a 3 licence copy of Office 2010 on her old laptop which was perfectly suitable. Luckily she'd not broken the seal, so I told her to take it back for a refund.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
