Going to buy a laptop. So, will need all the word, excel docs etc.
Microsoft office 2010 is about £80, and office 365 is about £40.
They look like they will both meet my requirements.
So, what is the main difference and as I only want the word, excel and power point, shall I just buy the office 365?
Thoughts and advice please.

Office 2010 you own (a perpetual licence in MS speak) and no more fees. Office 365 is an annual subscription.
You can get office 2013 for the same price as 2010, consider that instead of 2010.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
Office online is free, if that limited (not sure how limited) functionality is ok.

Had you considered using an alternative such as Libre Office or Open Office - both of which cover most features of Microsoft Office but are entirely free?
Before spending your hard earned cash try them out for nothing.

I have used Libre Office for some years now and have found it to be perfect for my needs. They use the same file formats as Microsoft so there is no problem in other people being not being able to open them.0 -
Libreoffice and Openoffice don't support VBA, so none of your macros will work.0

Another free alternative to Open Office and Libre Office is WPS Office (formerly Kingsoft).

Office 365 will very happily save files to any folder of your choosing, including those on your computer's disk, just like Office 2010.0 -

2010 Does Not
No its not, 365 is more cloud based but even that will save files where you tell it to save them.0
