I bought my daughter a Lenova and it's great.
Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
    And we were young.

At the risk of confusing the loopy_lass... the main reason for doing this is if the computer will not boot (unusual - but it happens). An optional part of this process is that something called the "recovery partition" is also copied to the USB stick. This allows the computer to be reinstalled -from the USB- to a factory state. BUT to do this you will need a USB stick of at least 8GB (possibly 16GB).

If you only have a small USB stick then you should NOT copy the recovery partition. You may say "but shouldn't I backup the recovery partition"? I guess you should BUT the next instruction from the very helpful Anne-Marie - also provides a very similar "system backup".
    There's nothing wrong with a belt-and-braces-approach though!

What this does is create a real-time image of the computer. This can be a large image to depending on what you have on your computer. Usually an external drive is used to store the image (e.g. a USB3 external disk).
Confusingly at the end of creating the image you may be asked if you want to create a "system repair disk" . This is very similar to the recovery USB above but requires a DVD or CD. There's no reason not to do this (Assuming you have a spare writable CD/DVD).

Label and store all your media carefully. If you think this is a nightmare, yes it is. Blame Microsoft.

Sorry if I have confused Loopylass, although she has yet, not suggested this. I think it's really important to have a recovery source, be it disc/usb or image (on disc or usb).
